North Shore Strikes Back, Sets Up Sunday Rubber Game

June 14, 2003 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Berkshire Black Bears News Release

A dramatic finish for the second straight night in Pittsfield; following an extra innings win from Berkshire Friday night, The North Shore Spirit held off a Berkshire Black Bear ninth inning rally to win 10-8 Saturday night at Wahconah Park. The Black Bears opened a three run lead after the first, then the Spirit countered with ten in a row before Berkshire made the game interesting, chipping away with a run in the eighth and four runs more in the ninth. The win improves the Spirit record to 8-10 and Berkshire drops to 9-13.

Spirit starter Miguel Baez (2-1) settled down to pick up his second win, pitching six strong innings after allowing three Black Bear runs in the first. Baez did not give up a hit over the next five scoreless frames. The Black Bears entered the ninth inning trailing by six runs but then things got interesting. Knocking off four straight hits, Berkshire put four runs across, making the score 10-8. With runners on second and third, Black Bears' left fielder Ryan Jones hit a high chopper towards third. Spirit third baseman Jason Startari charged the ball and threw wildly towards first but Fran Riordan ended the game with a defensive gem. Riordan scooped up Startari's low throw for the final out with the potential tying run rounding third for home.

Sunday's pitching match-up will pit Klae Calvert (1-0) for the Spirit against newcomer Brian O'Connor (0-0) for the Black Bears in the final game of the three game series.
