NEWARK, NJ, June 14-The Newark Bears scored three times in the first inning and defeated the Pennsylvania Road Warriors, 5-4, in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader at Riverfront Stadium. The Bears gained a split of the twinbill after being shut out in the first game, 4-0.
Danny Clyburn, Francisco Lebron and Wil Quintana all delivered run scoring hits with two outs in the first inning for Newark. Mike Piercy added a sacrifice fly in the second inning and Tom Hage hit a sacrifice fly in the 4th for the other Bears runs.
Right-hander Tom Stepka (3-3) started and earned the win for the Bears, going 5.2 innings and allowing 3 runs on 8 hits. He struck out four batters. Damon Ponce de Leon earned his fourth save, picking up the final four outs, despite allowing a two-out solo home run to Deurys Reyes in the 7th inning.
Lebron was 2-2 with a double, a walk and an RBI for the Bears, while teammate Paul Esposito went 2-3.
Pennsylvania was led by Isias Nunez, who was 3-4, and Dario Delgado, who went 2-3 with a home run, a double and a RBI.
The Bears and Road Warriors will play the final game of their three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1:35 PM. Jaime Navarro (0-0) makes his first start for the Bears. Former Newark right-hander Steve Gagliano (1-3) pitches for the Road Warriors.
