Allentown Ambassadors News Release

The Allentown Ambassadors scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break open a close game and beat the Elmira Pioneers 9-1 Saturday night at Bicentennial Park.

The game was scoreless until the fifth, when Ambassador starter Nolan Fry gave up a solo home run to Rolando Bello, his first of the season. The Ambassadors tied the game in the bottom of the inning, when Kevin Moore singled home Dan Singletary.

The Ambasssadors scored two to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Vic Davilla hit a two run home run to right-center off Elmira starter Geronimo Mendoza.

Then came the eighth. Mendoza got Ender Gonzalez to ground out to begin the inning, then gave up an infield single to Brian Macchi. That was the end of the night for Mendoza, and Ken Kawabata came in. He walked Davilla, and then balked the runners over. Ryan Bordenick then delivered on a suicide squeeze. With runners at the corners Singletary then singled, driving home Davilla. That was the end of Kawabata's night, and Ren Seki came in. He hit Greg Schmidt, which loaded the bases. The Pioneers got the second out when they cut down Bordenick at the plate on a Chris Hafich comebacker. Then Moore singled, driving in two, followed by a two run triple for Jorge Diaz. Gonzalez struck out to end the inning.

Fry got the win, his third, pitching seven innings and allowing only one run on five hits with six strikeouts and one walk. Mendoza took his first loss, pitching seven and a third, allowing four runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Wade Clark, who came into the game in the eighth when it was still a two run lead, got his third save. The win is the third in a row for the Ambassadors and moves their record to 10-9 on the season. They are now in second place a half-game ahead of Elmira, who dropped to 10-10. The two teams finish their series tomorrow afternoon. It's Father's Day and the Ambassadors are giving out floppy hats to the first 1000 fans. Game time is 5:05.
