Vic Davilla singled through a drawn in infield in the bottom of the tenth inning to drive home Jorge Diaz and propel the Allentown Ambassadors to a 5-4 win over the Elmira Pioneers Friday night at Bicentennial Park.
The game began with a wild first inning, with the Pioneers scoring three off John Dillinger in the top of the inning and the Ambassadors getting four in the bottom of the inning of Brian Edmondson. The Pioneers began the first with a single by Cleatus Davidson. Rolando Bello then doubled him home, followed by a Rafael Alvarez two run home run to dead center field. It was Alvarez's fifth homer of the season. The Ambassadors struck back in the bottom of the inning with an Ender Gonzalez solo home run, followed by Marlon Roche reaching on an error. Vic Davilla grounded out, then Ryan Bordenick reached on an error. Dan Singletary doubled home Roche, followed by a two run single from Brian Macchi.
After that the two starters matched zeros. They were interrupted by a one hour rain delay after the fourth inning, but both pitchers came back out. Edmondson finished with seven innings pitched, four runs allowed, only one earned, eight hits and six strikeouts. Dillinger came out to pitch the ninth inning, but left after Mike Valdes reached on an Ender Gonzalez error and Ryan Webb singled. John Boker then came in and got Carlos Rosario to ground into a double play. But Cleatus Davidson then tripled home Webb to tie the game.
Chris Keelin came into pitch in the tenth, and gave up a lead-off single to Jorge Diaz. Ender Gonzalez then walked. Marlon Roche was then hit in the face by a pitch when he was attempting to bunt. Roche was down on the field for several minutes before walking off under his own power. He was taken to a local area hosptial for observation. Davilla then singled home Diaz to win the game for the Ambassadors.
Carlos Gomez got the win, his first as a professional. Keelin took his first loss of the season. In defeat, Cleatus Davidson was 4-5 with a triple, an RBI, and a run scored. The win gets the Ambassadors back to the .500 mark and pulls them within a half game of Elmira in the standings for second place. The Pioneers are now 10-9. The two teams go at it in the second of three games tomorrow at Bicentennial Park. Tomorrow night is Flag Day/99.9 The Hawk Night. Game time is 7:05.
