Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ, June 14-Veteran right-hander Julian Heredia tossed a four-hit shutout as the Pennsylvania Road Warriors blanked the Newark Bears, 4-0, in the opener of a doubleheader at Riverfront Stadium Saturday night. The game marked the second time this season that the Bears have been shut out.
Heredia (1-2) struck out eight batters and walked two in picking up his first win of the season. He allowed three singles and only one extra-base hit, a double by Francisco Lebron in the 6th inning. The shutout was the third in Heredia's career and the first for the Road Warriors (11-28) this season.
Pennsylvania scored their first run in the first inning on a Mike Lopez-Cao RBI single off of Newark starter Al Hawkins. The Road Warriors added three runs off of Hawkins in the 3rd inning, only two of which were earned because of two fielding errors by Pete Maestrales.
Hawkins (2-3) pitched 2.1 innings, allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits. He struck out two and walked two. Alberto Castillo was terrific out of the Bears bullpen, tossing 4.2 scoreless innings. Castillo struck out 6 batters and walked only one, while allowing 2 hits.
