The North Carolina Courage finished a challenging season with a playoff loss to the Washington Spirit Sunday. On September 30, 2021, the Courage announced that Head Coach Paul Riley had been fired. The last five games of the season the Courage went 1-3-1 under interim head coach Sean Nahas but were able to hang onto the last playoff spot, the sixth seed, on the last day of the National Women's Soccer League regular season. They ended up losing to the Washington Spirit 1-0 in the NWSL Playoff Quarterfinals.
