Norris and Lombardozzi Selected to South Atlantic League Post-Season All-Star Team
September 2, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD -- Catcher Derek Norris and second baseman Steve Lombardozzi combined to give the Hagerstown Suns three selections to the South Atlantic League's 2009 Annual All-Star Team, matching the most accolades for any team.
Norris, Hagerstown's All-Star catcher, was named the All-Star Team's Designated Hitter, and also took home one of the league's three highest honors, as the SAL's Most Outstanding Major League Prospect.
Lombardozzi, meanwhile, was voted the top second baseman by the field managers, general managers, sports writers, and broadcasters of the 16 teams in the SAL. League President Eric Krupa announced the Annual All-Star Team on Monday.
Norris, just 20 years old and the Washington Nationals' fourth-round pick in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft, ranks second in the SAL in both home runs, with 23, and runs batted in, with 84. Norris is batting .289, and his 86 walks and .413 on-base percentage both lead the league by a wide margin.
Lombardozzi has scored the second-most runs in the SAL, with 87, and leads the Suns with a .296 batting average. Lombardozzi has also anchored the Hagerstown defense all season and, with a fielding percentage of .988, is just one percentage point shy of the SAL's all-time single-season mark for a second baseman. Lomardozzi was the Nationals' 19th-round pick in the 2008 Draft.
Rudy Owens of the West Virginia Power was chosen as the league's Most Outstanding Pitcher, and the Asheville Tourists' Jordan Pacheco was named Most Valuable Player.
The Hagerstown Suns play at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown, MD and are a Class "A" affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
