Norfolk Tides News Release
The Tides rallied with two runs in the sixth and one more in the eighth to knock off the Gwinnett Braves 4-3 in front of 9,012 fans Saturday night at Harbor Park.
The win was Norfolk's fifth straight on the homestand and its seventh straight over Gwinnett. The Tides' pitching staff has posted a remarkable 0.65 ERA (3-ER, 41.0-IP) over its last five games, and Norfolk has won nine of its last 10 home contests.
Trailing 3-1 in the sixth, the Tides loaded the bases on three straight one-out walks before Blake Davis lined a two-run single to right field to knot the score at three.
Norfolk broke the tie in the eighth inning, as Jai Miller led off the frame with a single before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Davis. L.J. Hoes then belted a double into deep center field off of Cory Gearrin (3-3), plating Miller and giving the Tides a 4-3 advantage.
The late rally made a winner out of Pat Egan (1-1), who worked two shutout innings of relief. Greg Burke worked a scoreless ninth to register his third save of the season.
With another scoreless outing, Burke has now allowed just two earned runs in 27.2 innings since July 8. Over that span, Burke has posted a 0.65 ERA while striking out 18 and allowing 14 hits.
Tides starter Dana Eveland turned in his 10th Quality Start in 14 outings with the Tides, as he allowed three runs - two earned - in six innings of work. Eveland struck out six while allowing four hits as he threw 60 of his 100 pitches for strikes.
Joe Mahoney added a solo homer in the win, his 10th long ball of the season.
The two clubs will continue their four-game series Sunday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch scheduled for 6:15. Zach Petersime (0-2, 3.97) will take the mound for Norfolk against right-hander Jair Jurrjens (3-6, 5.21).
Sunday will also feature the final postgame fireworks show of the season, courtesy of the Norfolk Admirals.
