Charlotte Knights News Release
(Durham, NC) - The first place Charlotte Knights opened the month of September with a 2-0 loss to the Durham Bulls in the finale of a two-game series from the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Saturday night.
Charlotte RHP Charlie Shirek (11-5, 3.65) went the distance and allowed two runs on just three hits in the loss. Shirek's only blemish on the night was a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to third baseman Brooks Conrad. The home run broke a scoreless game and proved to be the difference in the finale. In all, the eight-inning complete game effort was the longest outing of the season for Shirek.
The win for Durham was just their sixth in 19 games against the Knights this season.
Durham reliever Ryan Reid (6-3, 3.52) worked a scoreless 1.1 innings to earn the victory. Dane De La Rosa recorded the final four outs of the game to earn his 20th save of the season.
Before the game, Dan Johnson, Deunte Heath and Brian Omogrosso were promoted to Chicago. While Heath and Omogrosso received their second promotions of the season, Johnson was promoted for the first time in 2012. He became the 18th different player to go from Charlotte to Chicago this season.
Charlotte (81-61) had four hits to Durham's three. Alejandro De Aza, who was continuing his Major League rehab assignment on Saturday, went 0-4 with a strikeout.
Charlotte and Durham will now begin a two-game series from Knights Stadium on Sunday. The Knights are 8-0 against the Bulls at home this year. Sunday's opener is set for 7:15 p.m. RHP Andre Rienzo is expected to make his Charlotte Knights debut. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. and Knights players will wear special camouflage jerseys for the club's Military Appreciation series.
Sunday's game also features a Fan Appreciation theme, and fans will have the chance to win some great prizes, including tickets to see a Carrie Underwood concert in Charlotte, two ticket to two games of the Fall Classic -- including airfare and accommodations, roundtrip Amtrak tickets, and more.
