Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, KY - Brett Nommensen went 3-4 with a two-run double in the eighth inning on Wednesday night, playing a big part in the Hot Rods four-run, go-ahead rally. However, the Hot Rods (5-15) fell back into an old pattern allowing five runs in the ninth as Great Lakes (12-7) pulled out a 7-4 series-tying win at Bowling Green Ballpark.
The Hot Rods rally came when they were trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the eighth. Facing reliever Jordan Roberts, Bustin Biell was hit by a pitch to begin the frame. He took third when Tyler Bortnick doubled into the left-center field gap. That's when Nommensen stepped up and drove a slicing double into the left field corner, knotting the game at 2-2.
That was the end of the night for Roberts, who gave way to Luis Vasquez (W; 1-0). Vasquez promptly retired Mark Thomas on a grounder, which advanced Nommensen to third base. Eligio Sonoqui followed with a single through a drawn-in infield to give Bowling Green a 3-2 lead. He was replace by pinch-runner Chris Murrill, who stole second and third before scoring what looked like an insurance run on a single by Ryan Wiegand into center field making the game 4-2.
Unfortunately, Bowling Green needed all of those runs and a few more as the Loons rallied with a five-run ninth inning. Facing Scott Shuman (L; 0-2) Angelo Songco drew a lead-off walk before Blake Smith followed with a one-out walk of his own. Lenell McGee followed with a single to cut the lead to 4-3. That base hit was followed by a two-run double from Johan Garcia, giving the Loons a 5-4 lead.
Great Lakes wasn't satisfied with that, however. After a strikeout of Christian Lara, Rafael Ynoa reached on an infield single, putting runners at the corners. Then Brian Cavazos-Galvez delivered a bloop double to centerfield, scoring both runners, and capping the scoring at 7-4.
Shuman took the loss allowing five runs on four hits and two walks in the ninth inning. He has now taken back-to-back losses in his last two outings, allowing six earned runs in the process.
It ruined a win for Deivis Mavarez, who pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in relief of the starter Kyle Lobstein. Lobstein lasted 5.2 innings, his longest outing of the season, giving up just one earned run. He struck out three, walked three, and surrendered five hits in a no-decision.
Great Lakes starter Will Savage also took a no-decision despite hurling six shutout innings on just three hits. He struck out ten, walking two and hitting a pair of Hot Rods in the process.
The teams now meet up in the rubber game of the series on Thursday night at Bowling Green Ballpark. RHP Alexander Colome (0-1, 3.66) takes the ball against Great Lakes RHP Elisaul Pimentel (1-1, 3.21). Thursday night is a Thirsty Thursday, featuring $2 draft specials through the 7th inning, presented by Beaver 96.7 FM and All Hit WUHU 107. First pitch is 6:35 PM. Gates open at 5 PM for Season Ticket holders and 5:30 PM for the general public. For tickets, call 270.901.2121 or visit www.bghotrods.com.
