Clinton LumberKings News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA - A first-inning Grand Slam by Kalian Sams and a three-RBI game by Mario Martinez gave right-hander Taylor Stanton plenty to work with as the Clinton LumberKings handed the Cedar Rapids Kernels a 12-2 loss Wednesday night at Perfect Game Field.

Sams went 1-for-4 with his league-leading eighth home run, coming with the bases full against Kernels' left-hander Tyler Kehrer in the first inning. After Daniel Carroll tripled to open the game, Kehrer walked Nick Franklin and Vinnie Catricala. Sams then blasted one over the wall in left, becoming the first LumberKing to record a Grand Slam this season.

Stanton allowed an unearned run in the bottom of the first as Mike Trout doubled, stole third and scored on an error, but the Kernels got no closer than three runs. Gabriel Noriega doubled and scored on a Carroll single to center in the second, giving Clinton a four-run lead once more.

Three more runs, two coming on a single by Noriega helped chase Kehrer with one out in the fifth. Martinez added an RBI single, plating Catricala as well to give Clinton an 8-1 advantage.

Martinez would strike again in the eighth, lining a two-run single to plate both Dennis Raben and Catricala for an 11-1 lead. An error by Kernels' third-baseman Luis Jimenez plated the 12th and final run.

Stanton (W, 2-1) gave up the unearned run on five hits over 6.0 innings, striking out four. Left-hander Jose Jimenez allowed a run over 2.0 innings, and righty Daniel Cooper worked a scoreless ninth.

Kehrer (L, 0-2) was slammed for eight runs, five earned on seven hits over 4.1 innings. Cedar Rapids used five relievers after his exit, with right-hander Jeremy Berg surrendering another run and left-hander Buddy Boshers giving up three more.

Carroll paced Clinton's 14-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with a triple, run scored, RBI and two stolen bases atop the order. Martinez finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a season-high three RBI, while Sams finished 1-for-4 with the Grand Slam and four RBI. Noriega added two RBI as part of a 2-for-3 game.

The LumberKings (10-10) conclude the series against the Cedar Rapids Kernels (8-12) tomorrow night at Perfect Game Field, first pitch scheduled for 6:35 PM. Left-hander Jimmy Gillheeney (1-1, 2.21) will make his fifth start of the season. Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
