Bullpen Dominates In Silver Hawks 2-1 Win
April 28, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - Bobby Borchering broke a 1-1 tie with a solo homer in the sixth and the South Bend bullpen made the lead stand with four hitless and scoreless innings as the Silver Hawks defeated the Fort Wayne TinCaps 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon to even the series at a game apiece.
After Borchering's home run, Bradin Hagens (ND) came in to pitch the sixth and seventh innings and started the great afternoon for the relief corps. Despite two walks in the sixth, Hagens did not allow a hit and struck out four in his two innings on the mound. Chris Odegaard (ND) followed with two strikeouts in the eighth, while Yonata Ortega (SV, 5) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to convert his fifth straight save opportunity.
Early on it looked like it might be high scoring as both teams scored a run in the first inning, and oddly enough, both teams had two hits, a sacrifice, and an error that helped them to the early scores. Keon Broxton and Chris Owings both had singles for the Silver Hawks with Broxton scoring later in the inning on an error for the 1-0 lead.
Fort Wayne answered with Jeudy Valdez and Everett Williams having back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the first, and Valdez scoring on a sacrifice fly from Nate Freiman to knot the game at 1-1.
That would be the only run allowed by South Bend starter Dan Taylor (WP, 1-1) in his 5.0 innings on the mound. Taylor limited the TinCaps to just five hits while striking out a personal season-high seven batters.
Borchering put Taylor in line for a victory when he took Dexter Carter's (LP, 1-3) first pitch of the sixth inning over the wall in right. Borchering's first home run of the season came from the left side of the plate and gave the Silver Hawks a 2-1 lead. The South Bend bullpen took care of the rest.
Matt Davidson went 0-for-3 at the plate on Wednesday, snapping his team high hitting streak at 11 games.
The Silver Hawks and TinCaps wrap up the three game series with the finale on Thursday evening at 7:05 PM Eastern Time. South Bend will send LHP Mike Belfiore (1-1, 2.41 ERA) to the hill against Fort Wayne's RHP John Hussey (1-0, 4.80 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
