Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland Winterhawks rookie Nino Niederreiter has been named to the Western Hockey League's Western Conference Second All-Star Team.
In his rookie season, Niederreiter had 36 goals and 24 assists for 60 points. His 36 goals led the team and ranked him second among all WHL rookies. He was also tied for the rookie lead in game-winning goals with six and ranked third among rookies with 11 power play goals.
Niederreiter also starred for the Swiss team that advanced to the semi-finals of the World Junior Championship in January, scoring both the game-tying and overtime game-winning goals against Russia in the quarterfinals. He was named to the tournament All-Star team after leading the Swiss team with 10 points in seven games. Niederreiter was also one of four Winterhawks to play in the CHL Top Prospects Game.
"This is a terrific honor and we're extremely proud of Nino for being named to the Western Conference Second All-Star Team," said Portland Winterhawks General Manager & Head Coach Mike Johnston. "Nino has had an outstanding rookie season, and we look forward to him getting even better in the coming years."
At 17, Niederreiter is the youngest player to be named to any of the WHL All-Star teams this season, which includes first and second teams in both conferences. Joining him on the Western Conference second team is goaltender Drew Owsley (Tri-City), defensemen Jared Cowen (Spokane) and Radko Gudas (Everett), and fellow forwards Shane Harper (Everett) and Prab Rai (Seattle).
The Western Conference first team is comprised of goaltender Calvin Pickard (Seattle), defensemen Tyson Barrie (Kelowna) and Kevin Connauton (Vancouver) and forwards Craig Cunningham (Vancouver), Kyle Beach (Spokane) and Mitch Wahl (Spokane).
The Winterhawks open their first round playoff series with the Spokane Chiefs Saturday night at the Rose Garden at 7 p.m., and Game 2 will be Sunday at the Rose Garden at 5 p.m. Single game playoff tickets are on sale now at all Ticketmaster locations and online at ticketmaster.com, as well as the Rose Quarter box office and the Winterhawks' ticket office in the Memorial Coliseum.
