Nine Run Ninth Shoots Pio's Down

Elmira, NY- The Pioneers took a four run lead into the ninth inning, but the Jackals exploded for nine runs in the ninth to take a 13-8 win away from Elmira on Tuesday.
The Pio's fell behind early on Wady Almonte's first inning sac-fly, but Elmira answered in the bottom half of the inning picking up a run on Yuji Nerei's RBI groundout. The Jackals would go ahead in the third on Zack Smithlin's infield single, in the fourth New Jersey would add another run on Jay Laflair's solo homer to center to make it 3-1. In the sixth Elmira stormed back scoring three times to take a 4-3 lead. Jeremy Dodson got the rally started with a one out single, advancing to third on an error by the Rightfielder. Dodson then scored on Steve Checksfield's RBI single, Ronnie Deck then made it two straight RBI singles as he singled home Checksfield to tie the game. Jason Bryan made it three straight RBI singles, driving Deck home and giving Elmira a 4-3 lead.
The Pioneers lead was short-lived though as the Jackals tied the game in the top of the seventh. Elmira broke the tie in the bottom of the seventh, picking up a pair of runs thanks to Dodson and Checksfield's second RBI singles of the game to give the Pio's a two run lead. In the eighth Elmira's running game led to a pair of runs as Digz Edwards stole home to give the Pioneers a three run lead. Cleatus Davidson then singled home Abreu who singled and stole second earlier in the inning to make it 8-4.
In the ninth the Jackals put up nine runs, including a tie-breaking grand slam by Chris Rowan to take a 12-8 lead. The Jackals got nine runs off two different pitchers, scoring four times off Matt Elfeldt and five times against Ryan Cosentino, who took the loss, his first of the season.
