
Cutters Shake Things Up With Roster Moves

(West Haven, CT- August 3, 2004) The New Haven County Cutters today announced a trade with the Bangor Lumberjacks, of the Northeast League, that brings infielder Jeff Brooks and pitcher Laine McKeller to Yale Field for future considerations. In another move, the Cutters third baseman Ryan Kane was released.
Jeff Brooks, 24, is being reunited with Jarvis Brown who last year was his hitting coach with the St. Paul Saints of the Northern League. The Nottingham, PA, resident was a third round draft choice of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1997. His best season came in 1999 in the Pioneer League where he set career high's for batting average (.339) and homers (12) in 73 games.
Brooks is a .249 hitter with a .302 OBP, 36 home runs and 278 RBI in 506 career games spanning seven seasons. This season he played in four games with the Lumberjacks and went 2-for-15 with 2 RBI and a run scored.
Laine McKeller, 25, is in his rookie season of professional baseball having shown the ability to start and come out of the bullpen. In 18 games this season, he has posted a 3-1 with a 5.55 ERA 28 strikeouts and 14 walks in 35 2/3 innings pitched. The Beaumont, TX, native has made one start and 17 relief appearances this season with all three of his victories coming in the relief role.
To make room on the roster, the Cutters released veteran third baseman Ryan Kane. Kane batted.218 in 60 games this season. After hitting three homers in 16 at-bats to open the season, Kane hit one home run in his last 209 plate appearances. The Acton, MA, native was in turn signed by the Bangor Lumberjacks and will join the team in Lynn, MA, for the Lumberjacks-Spirit series.
Wednesday at Yale Field is United Way/ News Channel 8 Summer Camp Day and Whattaya Know Wednesday Kids Trivia. Camps from around the New Haven area will gather to root on the Cutters and test their knowledge. Winners of the trivia contest will have their names posted on the New Haven website, www.cuttersbaseball.com.
