Louisville Bats News Release
A consistent display of flawless pitching and dominant team offense powered the Louisville Mashers (15-30) to a 5-3 win over the Durham Bulls (28-19) on Saturday night at Louisville Slugger Field. The first four runs of tonight's game were scored from doubles.
Nicolino (2-2, 4.13) denied the Bulls offensively for eight shutout innings. He improved to 2-2 on the season after tonight's stellar performance, pitching 8.2 innings, allowing three earned runs from eight hits and three strikes on 107 pitches (80 strikes).
Durham right-handed starter, Zach Lee took the loss going six innings, allowing four earned runs from seven hits while striking out five.
The Mashers got things going in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Mason Williams reached first base on a single, Hernan Iribarren doubled on a line drive to take a 1-0 lead. The momentum continued as D.J. Peterson followed suit and doubled on a fly ball to center field to score Iribarren.
Doubles were trending all game for the Louisville hitters. Gabriel Guerrero led off the bottom of the fifth with a line drive double to reach second. Catcher, Chad Tromp followed up with another double to left field to score Guerrero. Before the inning was over, Phillip Ervin crushed another double to bring Tromp home and make it 4-0 Louisville.
A Durham fielding error in the bottom of the eighth scored Phillip Ervin to put the Mashers ahead by five going into the final inning.
Though they were kept quiet for the majority of the game, the Bulls threatened in the ninth. With the bases loaded, Adam Moore singled to score two runs. Designated hitter, Jeremy Hazelbaker then doubled to right field to make it 5-3.
Kevin Quackenbush replaced Nicolino following the sudden three run surge, retiring the final two batters on two strikeouts to record his fifth save of the season and secure the Louisville win.
The Mashers and Bulls will continue their four-game set on Sunday evening at Louisville Slugger Field. Louisville right-hander Jose Lopez (0-5, 5.31) will look for his first win this season against Durham's Ryan Weber (0-1, 2.93). First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
