Modesto Nuts News Release

MODESTO - Juan Nicasio wrapped up June with a dominating eight inning, three hit, eight strike out and one run allowed performance as the Nuts defeated the JetHawks 8-1 on Wednesday afternoon at John Thurman Field. Ben Paulsen had a triple in the third, a solo home run in the fifth and a double in the seventh. He was 3-for-4 with three runs batted in, and finished a single shy of the cycle.

Modesto won games two and three of the series, and has won two straight games. They managed to score for the first time in the series in game three after scoring twice in the third. They had two runs in the third, one in the fourth and one in the fifth against David Duncan. Duncan (0-3) allowed nine hits and four earned runs over five full innings in the loss.

Nicasio (7-4) kept Lancaster (25-52) scoreless through the first three innings, but he botched a two-out rundown in the fourth and allowed his only run of the game. Brandon Barnes had the first of Lancaster's two hits in the fourth, and scored their lone run. He scored from third when Nicasio failed to quickly retire Freddy Parejo during a pickoff play between first and second. Parejo was eventually tagged out on the bases by Radames Nazario, but he stayed alive long enough for Barnes to score.

Modesto's lead shortened to 2-1 after Nicasio allowed the one run in the fourth. Scott Robinson started their third with a double to left. Robinson moved to third on a single to right by Tim Wheeler, and then scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Jordan Pacheco. Paulsen's triple to right then brought in Wheeler from first, and gave Modesto a 2-0 lead.

Erik Wetzel put Modesto up by two again at 3-1 with a run batted in single to center in the fourth. Michael Zuanich started the fourth with a double off Duncan, and scored on Wetzel's hit.

Paulsen put the Nuts up 4-1 with a solo home run in the fifth. It was his first home run at John Thurman Field this season, and his fifth of the year. The Nuts have homered in three straight games. Brian Rike hit a two-run home run in the first game of the series, and Thomas Field hit a grand slam in game two.

Duncan left after the fifth, and relievers Kyle Godfrey, Ashton Mowdy and Mike Modica combined to finish the game. Mowdy allowed a walk and two hits in the seventh. He walked Wheeler, gave up a run batted in hit to Pacheco, and a RBI double to Paulsen in the seventh. Modica started the eighth with a walk to Zuanich, and then gave up double to Radames Nazario. Wetzel grounded out to shortstop and scored Zuanich, and a run batted in hit from Robinson plated Nazario.

Nazario was 3-for-4 with two runs, and two doubles for the Nuts. Ryan Peisel was the only Modesto player without a hit in the game.

Stephen Dodson worked a scoreless ninth, and struck out two while finishing the game.
