Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes suffered their first sweep of the 2010 season, as they fell to the High Desert Mavericks for a third straight game, losing 9-3 on Wednesday night at The Epicenter.

The Mavericks scored seven of their nine runs via the home run, as they blasted three round-trippers in the win.

Four batters into the game, the Mavs had the early lead, as Eddie Martinez-Esteve ripped a grand slam off of Quakes' starter Matt Shoemaker, making it a 4-0 game.

The Quakes responded with two in the bottom of the second, making it a two-run deficit against Mavs' starter Anthony Vasquez. Clay Fuller walked to open the inning, then scored on Luis Jimenez's RBI triple, putting the Quakes on the board at 4-1. Eric Oliver followed with an RBI groundout, making it 4-2.

The Mavs kept swinging though, as Trevor Coleman hit a two-run homer to right field, making it 6-2 in the fourth.

Shoemaker (6-6), allowed six runs on eight hits over six innings and was replaced by Jeremy Berg, who didn't fare much better in the seventh. Berg gave up a solo homer to Shaver Hansen, as the Mavs took a 7-2 advantage. With two outs, Berg then gave up back-to-back doubles, as Dennis Raben knocked in Jake Shaffer to put High Desert up 8-2.

The Mavs added a final run in the ninth, as Hansen delivered a run-scoring double off of Quakes' reliever Kyle Hurst, making it a 9-2 game.

Jon Townsend had a pinch-hit double and eventually scored from third on Angel Castillo's sac fly in the bottom of the ninth, as the Quakes rounded out the scoring at 9-3. The ninth-inning rally came to an end two batters later though, as Mavs' reliever Chris Kirkland fanned Jesus Campos to give the Mavericks the three-game sweep.

Vasquez (5-2) earned the win for High Desert, allowing two runs on four hits over seven frames.

The Quakes (2-5) look to end their four-game skid on Thursday night, as they welcome the Lake Elsinore Storm to town for a three-game series. Manny Flores (2-4) takes on Storm right-hander Erik Davis (7-3) in the series-opener.
