Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes dropped their third consecutive game, losing to the High Desert Mavericks at The Epicenter on Tuesday night, by a final of 6-5.
High Desert scored four runs in the second inning and took the lead for good, holding off the Quakes over the final three innings, to earn their second straight win in this three-game series.
After struggling offensively over the last two games, the Quakes hit the ball a bit better on Tuesday, scoring five times on ten hits. But they couldn't manage anything against the High Desert bullpen, as Mavs' relievers Blake Nation and Steven Richard limited the Quakes to just three hits over 3 2/3 scoreless relief.
Quakes' starter Ryan Chaffee (3-4) got touched for four runs in the second, as the Mavs took an early 4-0 advantage.
The Quakes answered with two in the bottom of the second, as Dwayne Bailey drove in a run with a groundout and Adam Younger doubled home a run, making it a 4-2 game against Mavs' starter Andrew Carraway (5-4).
Alexi Amarista scored a run in the bottom of the third to make it 4-3, as Gabe Jacobo was trapped in a run-down between first and second.
Steven Geltz allowed a pair of runs in the sixth, as the Mavs reclaimed a three-run advantage. Trevor Coleman's RBI single made it 5-3, before Geltz balked home a run to put the Mavs up 6-3.
Clay Fuller opened the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot down the left-field line, his first homer in a Quakes' uniform this year, making it 6-4. An Alberto Rosario ground ball to third chased home Angel Castillo to pull Rancho to within a run at 6-5. But with runners at second and third and only one out, the Quakes failed to score the equalizer, as Nation fanned Younger for the second out and got Rian Kiniry to ground out to end the inning.
The Quakes had one more quality chance in the eighth, but Richard worked around back-to-back two-out hits by Rosario and Younger, stranding two in scoring position when Kiniry flew out to deep-left. Richard set the Quakes down in order in the ninth, securing his eighth save of the year for High Desert.
Rancho Cucamonga (2-4, 41-35) looks to avoid the sweep on Wednesday night, sending Matt Shoemaker (6-5) to the mound against High Desert lefty Anthony Vasquez (4-2) at 7:05pm. Wednesday night is another Quakes' Alumni Magnet Giveaway, as the first 1,000 fans will receive a Player Magnet, featuring a former Great Quake. Gates open at 6:05pm. Tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at The Epicenter on Wednesday night...Go Quakes!
