San Jose Giants News Release
Visalia's Marc Krauss hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel the Rawhide to a come-from-behind 5-3 victory over the San Jose Giants on Tuesday evening at Recreation Park. It marked the second consecutive time in the series that a Visalia player hit a go-ahead home run in the eighth inning en route to a win over the Giants. San Jose has now lost five out of their first six games of the second half while their overall record falls to 46-30.
James Simmons (1-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) and Drew Biery (1-for-4, HR, RBI) each hit homers to account for all three of San Jose runs. Matt Klimas (3-for-3, 2B) also enjoyed a perfect night at the plate in his first game with the Giants.
San Jose took a one-run lead into the bottom of the eighth inning for the second straight game as Edwin Quirarte relieved starter Oliver Odle to begin the frame. Alfredo Marte led off the inning with a single as his pop-up dropped in between center fielder Juan Perez and shortstop Ehire Adrianza. Ryan Wheeler followed with a groundout to second base advancing Marte to second before Paul Goldschmidt took a walk. Krauss was up next and he blasted the first pitch of his at-bat over the fence in right field for a three-run homer and a 5-3 Visalia lead.
Krauss (4-for-4, 2B, HR, 5 RBI) drove home all five Rawhide runs to lead a 10-hit offensive attack.
In the top of the ninth, Jose Flores singled with two outs against reliever Bryan Woodall, however pinch-hitter Joel Weeks followed by grounding out to first base ending the game. Woodall, who lowered his season ERA to 0.26, recorded his second save of the series.
Quirarte (1-5) suffered the loss for the Giants after surrendering three runs (all earned) on two hits in his one inning of work. Odle tossed a season-high seven innings during his stint on the mound. The San Jose starter yielded two runs (both earned) on eight hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
Visalia initially took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when three straight two-out hits against Odle produced a pair of runs. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, Wheeler singled before Goldschmidt reached on an infield single to third base. Krauss followed with a double to deep right center field scoring both runners.
The Giants immediately answered in the top of the second as Charlie Culberson led off by drawing a walk before Simmons stepped to the plate with one out and belted a two-run homer to left center. The home run was Simmons' second of the series and fourth of the year.
The game remained tied until the top of the sixth inning when Biery connected for a solo homer to deep left center. The home run, Biery's eighth of the season, gave San Jose their first lead of the contest.
Odle settled down after the first inning and did not allow a run for the remainder of his outing. He induced double play groundouts in the third and fourth innings before striking out the side in the sixth. Odle retired the last five batters that he faced.
Francisco Peguero (2-for-4) and Flores (2-for-4) also finished with a multi-hit games for the Giants. Brandon Belt (0-for-4) saw his 16-game hitting streak come to an end.
Rawhide reliever Christian Beltre (3-1) picked-up the victory after working three innings with one run allowed, no walks and three strikeouts.
Notes: Entering the series, San Jose had suffered only one loss (37-1) this season when leading after seven innings ... The Giants have failed to hold an eighth-inning lead in each of the last two games ... Quirarte has suffered the loss in his last two appearances ... Visalia out-hit San Jose by a 10-9 margin ... Culberson (0-for-3, SB) saw his seven-game hitting streak end ... The Giants are still 9-5 against the Rawhide this season.
On Deck: The Giants look to avoid a three-game sweep when their series at Visalia concludes on Wednesday evening. First pitch at Recreation Park is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Eric Stolp (4-5, 4.48 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while the Rawhide are expected to counter with Ryan Cook (2-4, 4.63 ERA). The game can be heard live on www.sjgiants.com.
