Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Carolina Hurricanes today announced that they have recalled forwards Derek Ryan and Brock McGinn from Charlotte. Earlier today, Carolina also announced that it has assigned forward Phil Di Giuseppe to the Checkers.

This marks the first NHL recall of the season for Ryan and McGinn, who rank first and third on the Checkers in scoring, respectively. They are also tied for the team lead with five goals apiece.

An AHL All Star in his first professional campaign in North America last season, Ryan, 29, is currently tied for third in the league with 13 points in just nine games, including a pair of three-point outings that match his career high. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound native of Spokane, Washington, who is currently serving his second season as Charlotte's captain, became the oldest player to make and score in his NHL debut with the Hurricanes in March of last season.

McGinn, 22, has eight points this season, all of which have come during an active seven-game point streak that marks the longest of his career and is tied for the longest posted by an AHL player this season. The 5-foot-11, 186-pound winger from Fergus, Ontario, who scored three goals in his first 21 NHL contests with Carolina last season, also has goals in each of his last three games with Charlotte.

Di Giuseppe, 23, spent the first season and a half of his professional career with Charlotte prior to making his NHL debut last winter. Since Dec. 5 of last season, the 6-foot, 197-pound native of Toronto, Ontario, has played 52 NHL games with the Hurricanes, scoring 17 points (7g, 10a). Di Giuseppe, who has 49 points (19g, 30a) in 104 career AHL games with Charlotte, went scoreless in 11 NHL contests this season. His most recent AHL game was on Jan. 30 of last season.

The Checkers continue their six-game road trip with tonight's 8 p.m. match-up against the Iowa Wild. They approach the contest with a five-game win streak that is one short of tying a franchise record set in January of 2013 and ties the longest posted by any AHL team this season.
