
Checkers Jump Past Wild 4-1

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Wild (5-8-0-0, 10 points) were defeated by the Charlotte Checkers (7-3-0-0, 14 points) 4-1 in front of 6,143 fans on Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Checkers defenseman Matt Tennyson had a hat trick, leading the Checkers to their sixth straight win. Goalie Michael Leighton (6-0-0) made 33 saves for the win. Iowa goalie Steve Michalek (4-3-0-0) made 26 saves in the loss. Wild defenseman Gustav Olofsson scored his club's lone goal. Iowa welcomes the Ontario Reign for the first time in team history on Saturday at 7 PM.
After a scoreless first period, Checkers defenseman Matt Tennyson gave Charlotte a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the year at 15:58 of the second period. The power-play goal was assisted by Trevor Carrick and Sergey Tolchinksky. At 16:27 of the middle frame, defenseman Gustav Olofsson scored on the Wild power play, tying the game 1-1. Forwards Teemu Pulkkinen and Pat Cannone helped set up Olofsson's second goal of the season.
Tennyson scored his second goal of the night at 4:19 of the third period, giving Charlotte a 2-1 lead. The goal was set up by forwards Andrew Miller and Lucas Wallmark. Tennyson's shot beat Michalek on his glove side. Charlotte forward Clark Bishop made it a 3-1 game at 7:42 of the third period. Bishop's first goal of the season was set up by Wallmark and Roland McKeown. Tennyson completed his hat trick at 19:51 of the third period, extending Charlotte's lead to 4-1. The empty-net goal was assisted by Andrew Poturalski and Andrew Miller.
On Saturday, the Ontario Reign makes it lone visit to Wells Fargo Arena, the first meeting in history between Iowa and Ontario. The Wild celebrates Youth Sports Night by honoring local youth sports teams in Des Moines. The first 1,500 youths (12 and under) to the game receives an Iowa Wild Youth Jersey T-Shirt, sponsored by 107.5 KISS FM. It's also a Jim Beam Night presented by NASH FM, where fans 21 and older may enjoy a $5 Beam Apple Orchard or a $10 Beam Apple Orchard in a mason jar. The Brewdog pack is also available, which features a beer/hot dog voucher at the game and a voucher for a free drink at Legends Bar and Grill.
On Wednesday, the Rockford IceHogs return to Iowa for the second meeting between the two teams this season at Wells Fargo Arena. The game is a Winning Wednesdays. If the Wild wins, all fans in attendance get a free ticket to the next Wednesday game (Jan. 18). Every Winning Wednesday's fans can purchase two Tallboys for $10. Fans can bring in a Subway receipt to purchase a $5.00 ticket. Wednesday's game is also Mug Club night. The Mug Club package starts at $20 and includes an Iowa Wild mug, ticket, 18 oz. Bud Light and a hot dog.

The Wells Fargo Arena box office is open Monday - Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and closed on Sunday. For Saturday game days, the box office will open at 10 a.m. For Sunday game days the box office will open at 12 p.m. Fans may also purchase tickets by calling 1-844-55-HYVEE or by visiting participating Hy-Vee food stores locations in the greater Des Moines area.
