New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
PORTLAND, Maine - Matt Newman hit three doubles and the Fisher Cats tallied six as a team, but they missed too many good scoring opportunities in a 6-3 series-opening road loss to the Portland Sea Dogs.
The good opportunities started right away as Kevin Nolan and Newman reached in the first inning, but were stranded with only one out. A nearly identical situation occurred in the second when K.C. Hobson and Yusuf Carter were both stranded in scoring position.
Portland (60-33) made the Fisher Cats pay for their inability to bring those runs in. Derrik Gibson led off the first with a home run against starting pitcher Scott Copeland. An inning later, David Chester homered before Mike Brenly added a two-run shot to put Portland on top 4-0.
Copeland (L; 5-7) eventually worked five innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits. He gave up a career-high three home runs while tying a season high with four walks.
After surviving the first three innings, Portland's Jeremy Kehrt (W; 1-0) kept the Fisher Cats in check over six full frames. He allowed just one run - produced by a Michael Crouse sixth-inning single - to get his first decision since returning to Portland.
After the Sea Dogs grabbed a run in the seventh, the Fisher Cats got two back in the top of the eighth. Newman hit his third double to lead off the inning. With one out, Andy Burns plated Newman to make it 6-2. K.C. Hobson followed with a double to right to cut the deficit to 6-3 with his first Fisher Cats double.
The Fisher Cats tied a season high with seven doubles while Newman had his first career four-hit game. On the night, though, the Fisher Cats struggled with men on base, going 4-for-17 with runners in scoring position. They stranded ten in the loss.
The series continues on Saturday at 5 p.m. with a doubleheader. Radhames Liz and John Anderson are the scheduled starters for the Fisher Cats. Brian Johnson and Wilfredo Boscan will start for Portland. Radio coverage begins at 4:45 with Tom Gauthier on WGIR 610 AM and www.nhfishercats.com.
The Fisher Cats return home to begin an eight-game homestand after the All-Star Break on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. They'll open the homestand with four games against Portland featuring three Atlas Fireworks Shows and a Sunday hat giveaway. Tickets are available at www.nhfishercats.com, by visiting the Fisher Cats ticket office, and by calling (603) 641-2005.
