Brockton Rox News Release
(Brockton, Mass) - The Newark Bears (10-5) displayed impressive power in a 6-4 victory over the Brockton Rox (9-6), launching three home runs in the series opener Friday night at Campanelli Stadium.
The Rox offense got things started early when Dominic Ramos doubled to lead off the bottom of the first inning and was soon plated by Melvin Falu, giving Brockton a 1-0 lead.
The lead didn't last long as Daryle Ward stepped to the plate with two on and two out in the third inning and crushed a ball to right-center field for a three run blast.
Brockton answered with two runs in the fourth inning, tying the game 3-3, before the Bears once again took lead on a home run, this time a two-run shot from Tim Raines Jr in the last half of the fifth.
Trailing 5-3, Ryan Royster connected for an RBI double in the seventh, that scored Falu and cut the lead to one, but that would be as close as the Rox would come to toppling the Bears relief corps.
Royster has been red hot of late, homering four times and knocking in seven runs in his last four games.
The final Newark blast came in the ninth frame against reliever Jake Hale as Brandon Watson provided some insurance on a solo big fly.
Alex Smith (2-0) picked up the win, allowing three runs on five hits in six innings while walking four and striking out two.
Mike Smith (2-1) took his first loss of the season, lasting seven innings while giving up five runs on five hits while walking three and striking out four.
Mikey Melich (3) notched the save, hurling a perfect ninth.
The Rox stranded runners in each of the first eight frames (nine total), including the potential tying and go-ahead runs at second and third with just one out in the eighth.
Falu went 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and picked up his first stolen base of the season.
The homestand continues with a celebrity Saturday night that will feature former Celtic Dana Barros signing autographs at Campanelli Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:05 as the Rox look to even the series against the league leading offense of the Newark Bears. Robert Bono (2-0) gets the call for Brockton, looking for a team high third win.
