Newark Bears News Release

LITTLE FALLS, N.J. (JUNE 10, 2011) - Danny Santiesteban had three hits and two RBI and Paddy Matera delivered three clutch RBI, leading the Newark Bears to a thrilling 11-9 come-from-behind win over the New Jersey Jackals Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.

The win was the seventh in eight games for Newark (9-5) and enabled the Bears to draw even with the neighboring rival Jackals at 3-3 in the Essex County Challenge Cup series.

The game was delayed by rain for two hours and 42 minutes, eventually getting underway at 9:47 p.m. and the game ended at 1:13 a.m.

The Bears scored two runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings and added three more in the ninth to pull out the victory. Andrew Pluta (1-1) earned the victory, pitching the eighth inning and Mikey Mehlich pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his second save. Chris Rollins, signed earlier in the day by the Bears, pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief in his Bears debut.

The Bears scored three unearned runs off Jackals reliever and Kearny native Jeff Gogal (1-2) in the ninth inning to earn the victory.

Besides Santiesteban and Matera, the Bears received three hits and an RBI from Brandon Watson and two hits and RBI from Daryle Ward. The Bears continue their seven-game road trip Friday night, as they begin a three-game series in Brockton, Massachusetts against the Brockton Rox. Both the Bears and Brockton are tied for second place in the Can-Am League standings with identical 9-5 records, a half-game behind league-leading Quebec.

The Bears' 2011 season is played in the Can-Am professional baseball league, after spending 12 years in the Atlantic League. The Can-Am League, which also features neighboring rival the New Jersey Jackals, runs its season from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
