
Jackals drop rain-delayed series finale

Little Falls, N.J. - In a game that was delayed two hours and 42 minutes due to rain the New Jersey Jackals scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, but the Newark Bears scored three unearned runs in the top of the ninth to beat the Jackals 11-9 at Yogi Berra Stadium in the rubber match of a three game series.
Jeff Gogal took the loss after allowing four hits in the ninth inning. The four hits combined with two New Jersey errors allowed the Bears to score three runs and take an 11-9 lead.
After falling behind 4-0 after an inning and a half, the Jackals scored eight consecutive runs. Chris White had a two-run single in the second while Mike DeJesus also had a run-scoring base hit. In the third inning, it was Jeremy Slayden with an RBI single and Kris Sanchez with two RBIs. The Jackals tacked on one run in the fourth inning and another in the fifth inning, as Myron Leslie crushed an RBI double and White scored on an error. White went 4-for-5 with two stolen bases and a run scored.
The Bears came back with two runs in the seventh as Danny Santiesteban had an RBI triple and then scored on a wild pitch. In the eighth inning, Newark tied the score capped by an RBI single by Tim Raines Jr.
The Jackals regained the lead in the bottom of the inning, as Leslie singled, stole second and stole third before Mike Jones punched a groundball through the middle for an RBI.
Anthony Pluta (1-1) earned the win for Newark after pitching the eighth inning. Mikey Mehlich recorded his second save of the year after throwing a one-two-three ninth inning. The loss was Gogal's second of the season.
The Jackals return to action on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Worcester Tornadoes, as it will be the first meeting between the teams in 2011. Isaac Pavlik (2-0, 2.79 ERA), the league leader in strikeouts, is the probable for New Jersey. Cody Chrusciel and Matt Sutor have the call on the live webcast, beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
