Brockton Rox News Release

(Brockton, Mass.) - The Newark Bears (2-3, 25-27) halted the Brockton Rox (4-1, 30-21) franchise record tying home win streak at eleven games, pounding out ten runs on twelve hits in a series opening 10-2 victory at Campanelli Stadium on Thursday night.

Freddy Flores (4-4) did not look sharp in his shortest outing of the season, lasting only four and 1/3 innings, while giving up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits in the defeat.

Daryle Ward got things started for Newark, hitting a solo home run in the top of the second and then smacking an RBI single in the third to give the Bears a 2-0 lead.

Trey Hernandez connected for his fifth homer, cutting the lead in half in the fourth inning, but that would be as close as Brockton would get before things fell apart for the Rox in the fifth.

Twelve men batted for the Bears in the fifth inning, eventually chasing Flores, making way for Dan Schmidt (2.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 0 K) out of the bullpen. Neither Rox pitcher fared well in the frame as seven different Bears scored, widening the lead to 9-1. Brandon Watson had two hits, a run scored and an RBI in the frame, while Juan Martinez slapped a two-run double and also scored a run.

Casey Gaynor (3-1) tied his season high in innings pitched, while locking down the win in one of his best starts as a Bear. Gaynor tossed seven frames, allowing just two runs on four hits and struck out three.

It was a quiet night for the Rox offensively, but Melvin Falu and Shawn Williams each had a pair of hits. Falu went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base, while Williams extended his on-base streak to 25 straight games in a 2-for-4 night with two doubles.

Keith Brachold and Chris Valencia each had hit streaks snapped of ten and 18 games respectively in the affair.

Brockton looks to even the tally Friday night in game two, with a post game fireworks spectacular to follow the action on the field. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with Julian Sampson (4-2, 3.59) set to square off against fellow righthander Chris Vasami (5-2, 5.77).
