New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, N.J. - The New Jersey Jackals won their fifth consecutive contest - their fourth straight by one run - as they downed the New York Federals, 4-3, on the hottest night of the summer at Yogi Berra Stadium on Friday.
New Jersey starter Isaac Pavlik (9-1) scattered a season-high 12 hits, but pitched well enough to pick up his league-leading ninth victory of the season after allowing three runs and striking out seven batters while walking just one over seven innings. The win also gives Pavlik a new career high.
With New Jersey leading 4-1, Pavlik allowed three straight hits to open the eighth inning as a Brad Jackson RBI single cut the Federals' deficit to 4-2. Pavlik walked the next batter to load the bases before giving way to Steve Fox, who preserved the lead after retiring all three batters he faced and allowing just one run to score on a sacrifice fly.
Jackals' closer Jeff Gogal entered in the top of the ninth and struck out the side in order to notch his ninth save in as many chances.
After the game went scoreless through three and a half innings, New Jersey opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth. Nick Giarraputo, who led off with a single, advanced to third when Federals' first baseman Eddie Lantigua misplayed a grounder off the bat of Kris Sanchez. The next batter, Nick Santomauro, lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to make it 1-0.
The Federals countered in the top of the fifth, evening the score at 1-1 when catcher Sandy DeLeon led off with a double to left center and scored later in the inning on a Jacob Rosenbeck RBI single.
In the bottom of the fifth, New Jersey plated three runs to chased Federals' starter Jim Schult from the contest. Schult issued a pair of free passes to open the inning and later in the frame, Mike Jones pushed both of those walks across with a two-run single through the right side. After Schult hit Nick Giarraupto with a pitch, a Kris Sanchez RBI single with the based loaded extended the New Jersey lead to 4-1. With the bases still loaded and just one out, reliever Zach Woods entered for New York and retired the first two batters he faced to limit the damage and end the inning.
Schult (0-2) suffered the loss, walking five batters and allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits over 4 1/3 innings.
The Jackals and Federals play the third contest of their four-game series on Saturday 1:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends right-hander Shaun Ellis (4-1, 4.46 ERA) to the mound against New York righty Michael Streaman (1-3, 5.74 ERA). Cody Chrusciel and Matt Sutor have the call on the live webcast beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch at jackals.com.
