New York Red Bulls News Release


BULLS KICK OFF WEST COAST SWING AGAINST CHIVAS: After playing their last five games at home, the New York Red Bulls hit the road for three-straight against Western Conference opponents. On Saturday, the Red Bulls will take on Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center at 10:30 PM ET (TV: FSC, FSE; Radio: WADO 1280 AM) for the second and final time this season.

New York was able to end its homestand with a 2-2-1 record after a 1-1 tie against the New England Revolution on Friday night. Forward John Wolyniec was able to give the Red Bulls a point in the second half with his second goal of the season. New York faces a Chivas team that is in the midst of the playoff race. With 37 points off an 11-9-4 record, the Goats earned a 0-0 tie against Seattle Sounders FC at Quest Field Saturday night. Goalkeeper Zach Thornton recorded his 10th shutout, making six saves, while Chivas was forced to play a man down for the final 19 minutes after defender Marcelo Saragosa received a straight red card. Chivas is currently in a wild card spot, three points ahead of chasing Real Salt Lake and Toronto FC.

The Red Bulls are 3-3-3 all-time against Chivas USA and won last year's season series with a 1-0-1 record. Chivas USA defeated New York, 2-0, in the first game between the sides on Aug. 15 at Giants Stadium. Maykel Galindo tallied a first half goal to put Chivas ahead, before substitute Eduardo Lillingston iced the game with a strike of his own in second half stoppage time. Lillingston leads Chivas in goals with seven, while U.S. Men's National Team midfielder Sacha Kljestan has three goals and two assists. Thornton, a former Red Bull, has a League-best 0.78 goals against average. Goalkeeper Jon Conway should also be available for selection against his former team. The Red Bulls announced on Sept. 11 that it acquired Chivas USA's 2011 natural fourth round SuperDraft pick in exchange Conway's rights. Conway's contract was terminated by New York on June 29, but the Red Bulls maintained the goalkeeper's first right of refusal to sign.

New York faces Chivas this Saturday before playing road games against the San Jose Earthquakes on Oct. 4 and Real Salt Lake on Oct. 14.

RED BULLS CLAW BACK TO EARN 1-1 DRAW: A second half John Wolyniec goal helped give the New York Red Bulls a 1-1 tie against Eastern Conference rival, the New England Revolution, on Friday night at Giants Stadium. New York wrapped up a five-game homestand with a 2-2-1 record and is 4-17-5 (17 pts.) this season.

New England put its name on the scoreboard in the 13th minute. Steve Ralston found Sainey Nyassi on the right wing. Nyassi gathered the ball, juked into the box and blasted a short-angle shot past goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul and into the top corner of the net.

The Red Bulls' best scoring chance of the half came in the 38th minute. Macoumba Kandji made space for himself on the right wing and curled a cross to forward Wolyniec, who had a step on his defender at the six yard box and nodded the ball just wide.

Four minutes later, a Shalrie Joesph delivery into the box was deflected by a leaping Andrew Boyens and skipped just past the left post. Red Bulls midfielder Luke Sassano got on the end of a Dane Richards pass soon after and volleyed it over the net.

The Red Bulls appealed for a penalty kick three minutes into the second half. Wolyniec was able to get free deep into the Revolution box and looked like he was taken down from behind by New England defender Emmanuel Osei. However, referee Hilario Grajeda did not blow his whistle, as the play continued.

Coundoul kept the Revolution's lead at one in the 62nd minute when he sprawled out to save a Kevin Alston shot after the New England defender played a give-and-go with Joseph.

Wolyniec tied the game for New York in the 69th minute. Substitute Albert Celades passed the ball to Kandji in the middle of the field. Kandji took the ball and found Richards on the right and his low cross into the box was slid in from close range by an unmarked Wolyniec. Wolyniec was injured on the play and left the game with a left ankle sprain.

Both teams pressed to earn the three points. With nine minutes left, Danleigh Borman laid the ball off to Kandji and the forward blasted it high from 15-yards-out. Moments later, Nyassi volleyed a long corner kick into the side netting.

Kandji had a golden chance to win the game in the 90th minute. Celades was able to find Kandji in New England's defensive end and the Senegalese forward quickly turned on Osei and drove towards goal. With only goalkeeper Matt Reis to beat, Kandji hooked his attempt past the left post.

Red Bulls forward Juan Pablo Angel missed the match due to a right ankle sprain while defender Carlos Johnson was serving a one-game suspension.

MSG CHANGES, SPT TELEVISES MATCHES: One Red Bulls match originally scheduled to be telecast live on MSG was switched to another channel, as New York's Oct. 24 clash against Toronto FC at 7:30 PM was moved from MSG to MSG 2.

Also, Portuguese station SPT will be airing their third of four Red Bulls games Tuesday night at 9:00. Play-by-play Jorge Lucio and analyst Mario Filipe Marques will call the Red Bulls-Revolution match from last Friday. The Red Bulls match in Portuguese can be seen in the Metropolitan New York area on Comcast (Channel 697) and Cablevision (Channel 276) cable systems.

JOHN ON THE SPOT: New York Red Bulls forward John Wolyniec was the hero in last Friday's 1-1 tie against the New England Revolution, slotting home a Dane Richards cross for the team's lone goal of the game. Wolyniec now has 26 regular season goals and 32 in all competitions.

Forward Juan Pablo Angel missed his second-straight game with a right ankle sprain, but is one goal away from breaking Clint Mathis' record for goals in all competitions. Angel was signed by New York as a Designated Player on April 17, 2007, after a successful stint at English Premier League club, Aston Villa. In his first season, Angel scored 19 goals in 24 games. Last year, Angel racked up a team-high 14 goals, leading the Red Bulls to their first MLS Cup Final appearance.

JOHNSON TO BE AVAILABLE: Red Bulls defender Carlos Johnson is available for the Red Bulls' tilt against Chivas USA after serving a one-game red card suspension against the New England Revolution last Friday. Midfielder Seth Stammler is on warning and will be suspended one match if he receives a yellow card in New York's next two games.

RED BULLS ANNOUNCE FAN OF THE YEAR CONTEST: Red Bull New York has announced that the New York Red Bulls 2009 Fan of The Year contest will be conducted via fan video submissions. To be a contestant fans need to submit a video no longer than 1:00 minute in length on DVD or by a computer file (9 MB maximum) explaining why they should be the Red Bulls Fan of the Year. The video that receives the most votes in online fan voting will be named the 2009 Fan of The Year and will be recognized and introduced at the Red Bulls' final regular season on Saturday, October 24 when the New York Red Bulls take on Toronto FC.

All submissions must be received by Wednesday, September 30. After the Fan of The Year Committee reviews the videos and selects the finalists, then the online voting process will begin. Fans will have the opportunity to view the finalists and cast their vote for who they think deserves the honor of being named the New York Red Bulls 2009 Fan of the Year. The voting process will begin on Monday, October 5 and end on Monday, October 12.

RED BULLS ACADEMY UPDATE: Sept. 21, 2009-09-21

A Look Back:

U14s: On Saturday, Sept. 19, the U-14 faced Den of Lions at Ironbound Field in Newark, NJ. The Red Bulls opened the scoring in the 46th minute after Juan Pablo Rojas placed the ball over the goalkeeper, finishing a great pass from Wilson Rios. A goal down, Dens of Lions began to press and look for the tie and their effort was successful in the 51minute after a bad clearance in the middle that found a wide open player, who finished the chance. The game finished, 1-1.

"For the first time out, it was a good game for the group, they showed good attitude and personality, which is positive moving forward," said U-14 Head Coach Antonio Meza.

The team came back in action on Sunday at Brenwood, winning the game, 8-1. The scoring started in the 10th minute with Derrick Etienne tallied his first goal for the Red Bulls U14s. The young player finished a great ball from Rojas. Twelve minutes later, Rojas finished a cross from Justin Yacovino. Rojas went onto score four goals while Vincent Brunetti also recorded a goal and Etienne scored another.

"The game looked easy from the scoreline, but we faced a team that never stopped playing and always fought to try to get back on the game. I though we did a much better job than Saturday playing collectively. We possessed and moved the ball really well and that was one of the reasons why the score was so high," Meza said.

U14s Pre-Academy: The U14 Pre-Academy Team beat BW Gotschee 4-2 on Sunday, Sept. 20.

Arun Basuljevic opened the scoring, converting a penalty kick after Michael Kapitula got pulled down by the Gotschee goalkeeper. Gotschee tied the scored a few minutes later, but Adam Najem put home a Matt Mahoney cross to give the Red Bulls the 2-1 lead. Again, Gotschee leveled a few minutes later. Karl Cesar scored the go-ahead goal on a pass from Najem to give the Red Bulls the 3-2 halftime lead. Russell Canouse scored off a pass from Clayton Taylor in the second half to secure the win. The U14's did not allow a shot on goal the entire second half.

"We played some good attacking soccer today," said U14 Head Coach Rob Elliott. "In the second-half we adjusted defensively and did quite well to not allow any chances."
