Last Game vs. Colorado
Earthquakes 1, Colorado Rapids 1; Sept. 18, 2009; Buck Shaw Stadium; Santa Clara, Calif.
Through 90 minutes of their game against the Colorado Rapids, the San Jose Earthquakes had victory in their grasp. But a stoppage time penalty from Rapids forward Conor Casey allowed the visitors to draw level, and the Quakes were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw. San Jose had gone ahead through Ryan Johnson's header in the eighth minute, and a suddenly resilient Quakes defense thought they had done enough to stymie Colorado's high-octane duo of Casey and Omar Cummings. But two minutes into stoppage time, a goalmouth scramble saw Colorado's Drew Moor hauled down by a San Jose defender, and Casey duly rammed home the spot kick past Quakes 'keeper Joe Cannon. The match began at a frenetic pace. With the game less than two minutes old, a San Jose throw-in was flicked on by Ramon Sanchez to Shea Salinas who rocked the post with a volley from 16 yards. Cornell Glen was first to the rebound but his shot was stuffed by Rapids goalkeeper Preston Burpo. With both sides displaying some sharp passing, the Quakes went ahead on the simplest of plays. Brandon McDonald's long throw found Johnson in the box, and his looping header from eight yards sailed over Burpo and snuck inside the far post for a 1-0 lead. After some key substitutions on both sides, the game crackled to life. Cannon was forced to make a fine double save, first denying Casey's shot from eight yards, and then stopping Cummings rebound attempt from point-blank range. Cannon then had to be sharp again two minutes later as he palmed away a dangerous looking cross from Michael Holody. The Quakes succeeded in not only calming down the tempo, but they thrice came close to making the game safe starting in the 78th minute. Both Salinas and Bobby Convey shook loose on the right wing, but neither of their centering feeds resulted in clear shots on goal. Chris Wondolowski and Convey then embarked on a 2-on-1 break in the 82nd minute, but Wondolowski failed to read Convey's pass into the box, and the chance was squandered. The Quakes would rue those missed opportunities in the second minute of stoppage time, when referee Edvin Jurisevic pointed to the spot after Moor was hauled down.
Last Game vs. D.C. United
Earthquakes 2, D.C. United 2; July 25, 2009; Buck Shaw Stadium; Santa Clara, Calif.
The San Jose Earthquakes tied D.C. United 2-2 at Buck Shaw Stadium. Ryan Johnson scored his seventh goal of the season and Cornell Glen added another one to tie the game. D.C. United's Christian Gomez had staked the visitors to an early lead, scoring twice inside of 21 minutes. But Ryan Johnson pulled a goal back for the home side nine minutes before halftime, and Cornell Glen's second-half penalty brought the Quakes level, earning them a share of the points. Those in attendance had barely settled into their seats when United broke on top. A long ball was headed by Chris Pontius towards Luciano Emilio on the right side of the San Jose box. Emilio then got tangled up with Quakes defender Mike Zaher, and after consulting his assistant, referee Kevin Stott pointed to the spot. Gomez duly slotted the resulting penalty past Quakes 'keeper Joe Cannon, giving the Black-and-Red a 1-0 lead. The Quakes responded by threatening twice in a five-minute span through Antonio Ribeiro and Ramon Sanchez, but United 'keeper Josh Wicks was on hand to save both efforts. United were enjoying most of the possession, however, and Gomez doubled his haul for the night with a fortuitous goal in the 21st minute. Jacobson's shot from distance deflected off Zaher right into Gomez's path and the Argentinean's simple finish from seven yards gave United a 2-0 lead. But just when it seemed as if the home side would get overrun, the Quakes climbed back into the game with a 36th-minute goal that was equal parts luck and pluck. Zaher's cross from the left wing was deflected high in the air, but Glen's flick header kept the play alive, and Johnson outmuscled Marc Burch at the far post and scored with a thumping volley. Johnson's night wasn't to last much longer, however. His attempt to latch onto a Darren Huckerby cross three minutes later saw him land awkwardly over Burch, and a left shoulder injury soon forced him to make way for Chris Wondolowski. The Quakes made one switch at half, with Shea Salinas coming on for Ribeiro. The overall play was less frantic than the first half, although Emilio did hook a shot just over the bar in the 49th minute. In a bid to kill the game off, Soehn brought on Jaime Moreno for Jacobson in the 55th minute. But the switch couldn't prevent the Quakes from equalizing seven minutes later. Huckerby's cross from a short corner was handled in the box by Wallace, and Glen fired home his spot kick past Wicks to bring San Jose level. Both sides were reduced to half-chances thereafter, but neither team could achieve a breakthrough, forcing them to settle for a point each.

Zaher Visits Norwood Creek Elementary
Earthquakes defender Mike Zaher visited Norwood Creek Elementary School Tuesday, September 15 as part of the Amway Global Kicks for Kids Program. Zaher was first introduced to the students by Norwood teacher, Brett Lotz, and was welcomed with overwhelming cheers and applause from the fifth and sixth graders. The Nevada native stressed the impact a healthy diet and active lifestyle had on his life growing up playing multiple sports. Zaher explained to the children how the choices he made as a child to eat healthy foods helped him achieve his goal of becoming a professional athlete. The children were all very active in sports and wanted to know his daily food routine so they could try to eat the same things as well. Zaher also emphasized the importance of staying hydrated and drinking a lot of water. He told them that especially in the California heat, it is important to drink a lot of water to combat dehydration. After Zaher finished his speech, he opened the floor to a question and answer session. The children asked a variety of questions ranging from his favorite color to questions about the Earthquakes team and the current season. Zaher then transitioned from the Q&A to a soccer skills demonstration. Zaher invited several of the children to the stage and gave them the chance to juggle the ball for as long as they could. Lotz also joined in the fun and showed off some of his juggling skills and tallied 21 headers with Zaher in front of the children. To conclude the afternoon, Zaher signed player cards and Earthquakes staff handed out over 150 jersey replica shirts and 150 tickets, donated by Amway Global, to the students to attend the Earthquakes home game on September 18 against the Colorado Rapids at Buck Shaw Stadium.

During the month of October, National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Earthquakes will be hosting two home games to collect donations, Oct. 3 vs. New York Red Bulls and Oct. 7 vs. FC Dallas.
