HARRISON, N.J. - The New York Red Bulls have transferred Amro Tarek to El Gouna FC, the club announced today. Tarek heads back to Egypt on a free transfer with a 20-percent future sell-on fee. He will remain with the club through September 15 before returning to Egypt.
"We wish Amro the best moving forward," Head of Sport Kevin Thelwell said. "He has been a key piece to our back line the last three seasons and hope for nothing but success for him from here on out."
Tarek, 29, was acquired by New York via a trade with Orlando City SC on December 11, 2018. He made 46 appearances for the club over three seasons, accumulating 3,278 minutes played. During this season, he has appeared in 13 matches amassing 864 minutes and contributed to four clean sheets. He scored his first goal for the Red Bulls on May 4, 2019, in a 3-2 win against the Los Angeles Galaxy. He received the 2019 Newcomer of the Year award in his first season with New York after appearing in 20 matches and tallying one goal and an assist.
"Amro is a professional on and off the field and has been a great player to coach," Head Coach Gerhard Struber said. "As a staff, we are thankful for our time with Amro and wish him the best moving forward."
Prior to New York, Tarek made 21 other appearances in Major League Soccer with the Columbus Crew (2016) and Orlando City SC (2018). During the 2017 season, he played for Wadi Diegla in the Egyptian Premier League. He made 83 combined appearances for Egyptian Premier League teams, which included Wadi Degla, El Gouna, and Enppi. Tarek made his Egyptian senior national team debut on March 28, 2017, in a friendly against Togo and most recently earned his first international start in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Swaziland.
