New York Red Bulls News Release
HARRISON, NJ (December 3, 2014) - The New York Red Bulls announced on Wednesday that the club has signed forward Bradley Wright-Phillips as a designated player ahead of the 2015 season. As per league policy, details of the deal were not disclosed.
"Following his outstanding performances in 2014, which produced 31 goals in all competitions, the club has decided to make Bradley Wright-Phillips a MLS Designated Player," said New York Red Bulls Sporting Director Andy Roxburgh.
"Bradley is not only a prolific goal scorer, he is an excellent professional and a great team player who will be a big asset to the club in the coming seasons."
Wright-Phillips' 2014 campaign earned him multiple awards and accolades including being voted the team's MVP, named to the MLS Best XI team and winning the Castrol Index Top Player Award.
Wright-Phillips, who joined the club midseason in 2013, made 2014, his first full season in MLS, a memorable one. The Englishman broke the single-season New York franchise scoring record and tied the all-time single-season scoring record in MLS with his 27 goals.
The 2014 MLS Golden Boot winner broke the club record, previously held by Juan Pablo Angel, on August 23 against the Montreal Impact. Wright-Phillips recorded a brace in a 4-2 win at Red Bull Arena to become the first player in club history to score 20 goals in a single season.
After breaking the club scoring record with his 20 th tally, Wright-Phillips went on to score seven more goals in New York's final nine regular-season games. The forward finished the regular season with a two-goal performance in a 2-0 win at Sporting Kansas City that gave the Red Bulls home field advantage in the knockout round of the 2014 MLS Cup Playoffs.
In the postseason, Wright-Phillips recorded four goals in four appearances and helped the Red Bulls return to the Conference Championship for the third time in franchise history and the first time since 2008.
Along with 31 combined goals in the regular season and playoffs, Wright-Phillips also scored a goal against FC Bayern Munich in the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game and another against Arsenal FC in a friendly at Red Bull Arena.
