December 3, 2014 - Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release
LOS ANGELES (Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014) -Today at an event in Los Angeles, Major League Soccer unveiled LA Galaxy forward Robbie Keane as the Volkswagen MLS Most Valuable Player for the 2014 season. The recognition comes on the heels of a season - his fourth with the LA Galaxy - that proved to be the Irish international's best in MLS to date.
In 29 games, Keane recorded 19 goals and tallied 14 assists, both MLS career highs. He placed third in the league for goals while tying for second-most assists, giving the Designated Player the highest combination of goals and assists in the league. Keane also recorded the highest number of game-winning assists in 2014 with six.
Since signing with the Galaxy in late 2011, the iconic forward has notched a total of 53 goals and 35 assists in 84 regular season appearances. Keane will captain the Galaxy as it hosts on New England Revolution in MLS Cup 2014 on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 3:00 p.m. ET at StubHub Center (ESPN, UniMas, UDN, TSN and RDS).
The award was voted on by media, MLS players and MLS club management based on regular season performance. The other two finalists were Seattle Sounders FC forward Obafemi Martins and New England Revolution midfielder Lee Nguyen. Below is a breakdown of the voting for the top four candidates:
