D.C. United's Bill Hamid Shuts out Competition and Claims Allstate Goalkeeper of the Year

December 3, 2014 - Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release

NEW YORK (Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014) - The extraordinary performances of two diverse Major League Soccer players are recognized today as MLS announced the winners of the 2014 Allstate Goalkeeper of the Year and Newcomer of the Year awards. D.C. United goalkeeper Bill Hamid took home the goalkeeping award after helping his hometown club stage a remarkable comeback in 2014 which saw the club top the Eastern Conference after a last-place finish the year before. North of the border, Vancouver Whitecaps FC midfielder and captain Pedro Morales nabbed the newcomer award after making a name for himself in his first year in the league, guiding Vancouver to its first playoff appearance since 2012.

2014 Allstate Goalkeeper of the Year: Bill Hamid - D.C. United

Bill Hamid had a breakthrough season between the pipes for D.C. United in 2014, his fifth season with the club. Hamid was one of the key components of D.C.'s amazing comeback in which the team claimed the top spot in the Eastern Conference after setting a league-worst record in 2013. This year, Hamid recorded the most minutes of his career for D.C. United with 2,700, and set regular season career highs with 10 shutouts and 110 saves. The Virginia native finished second in league shutouts, three behind Vancouver's David Ousted, and recorded the second-best goals against average with a 1.13 average among goalkeepers that played more than 2000 minutes. Hamid's success did not go unnoticed, as he went on to earn his second-ever cap for the U.S. men's national team, playing a full 90 minutes in the Americans' 4-1 loss to Republic of Ireland on Nov. 18.

The Allstate Goalkeeper of the Year award was voted on by media, MLS players and MLS club management based on regular season performance. The other two finalists were Real Salt Lake's Nick Rimando and Columbus Crew SC's Steve Clark. Below is a breakdown of the voting for the top four candidates:

The 29-year-old immediately asserted himself as a key cog in Vancouver's attack, recording team highs with 10 goals and 12 assists. Vancouver compiled a 10-1-4 record when Morales notched a goal or an assist in 2014. Morales also inherited the captain's armband following longtime defender Jay DeMerit's retirement in July, and helped lead the 'Caps to the knockout round of the 2014 MLS Cup Playoffs.
