New York Defeats Columbus Crew 2-1

The New York Red Bulls (12-11-7, 43 points) defeated Columbus Crew SC (10-13-8, 38 points), 2-1, on Saturday night at Lower.com Field.

The Red Bulls opened the scoring in the 7th minute, when defender Tom Edwards delivered a corner kick into Columbus's eighteen yard box, which found the head of Cristian Cásseres, Jr.. Cásseres, Jr headed the ball down and into the back of the net.

Columbus leveled the match in the 19th minute, when midfielder Lucas Zelarayn delivered a ball to New York's near post, where forward Miguel Berry sent a low shot into New York's net.

New York found the game-winner in the 87th minute, when Casseres delivered a ball to Columbus's far post and forward Patryk Klimala headed the ball across the goal for defender Sean Nealis, who fired it in the back of the net.

New York extended their unbeaten streak to eight matches for the first time in a single season since 2013, which ran from August 31 to October 27.

With the victory, New York moved to 43 points on the season and into sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

After starting the season with a 1-8-2 record on the road, New York has won their last four road matches, outscoring their opponents, 8-1, in those matches.

This is the first time New York have won four-straight road matches in a single season since 2000, which ran from June 3 to July 8.

Cásseres, Jr. scored his sixth goal of the season and his second in two-straight matches, which includes the game-winner against New York City FC on October 17.

The Venezuelan midfielder has recorded a goal or an assist in four-straight matches, which ties the longest streak by a New York player this season.

In his last four matches, Cásseres, Jr. has tallied two goals and all three assists that he has recorded this year.

The Red Bulls have won four matches in a row for the first time since 2018, which ran from September 22 to October 21.

Edwards tallied his second assist of the year and his first since September 17 against Inter Miami CF. He is the fifth Red Bulls defender to record at least two assists this season.

Nealis scored his first goal of the year and ties his career-high for goals in a single season.

The Massapequa, New York native scored the second game-winning goal after the 75th minute this season with the first being from Fabio on July 3 against Orlando City SC.

New York has recorded four-straight wins in October and have had four different game-winning goal scorers in Gutman, Fernandez, Cásseres, and Nealis.

The Red Bulls have earned 36 away wins since 2015, which is tied for first in MLS.

Klimala earned his sixth assist of the season and his first since September 11 against D.C. United.

The Polish striker has recorded a goal or an assist in six of his last 10 matches.

The Red Bulls shutout streak was snapped at 363 minutes, which is the sixth-longest in franchise history.

During New York's unbeaten streak, they have only allowed three goals, which is the lowest in MLS during that timespan.

Since 2015, New York is 90-19-23 when scoring the first goal of the match, including a 12-5-3 mark this season.
