New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ- The New Jersey Jackals showed guts, rallying back late to beat the Rox 8-7.
New Jersey came out with purpose in their first at bats. Zack Smithlin and Wady Almonte consecutively notched singles. With two outs, Jackal slugger Scott Goodman doubled deep to left, scoring both runners, and giving New Jersey the early 2-0 lead.
The Brockton offense would hit first gear in the top of the second. With one out, third baseman Jake Daubert crushed a solo homerun over the right field wall, to put the Rox on the board.
Scott Goodman would strike again for the Jackals in the bottom of the fifth. After singles by Almonte and Wilton Veras, Goodman singled, scoring two, to give the Jackals a 4-1 lead.
But in the top of the sixth, the Brockton bats would once again come alive. Nestor Smith led off by getting hit by a pitch. Abner Arroyo then singled to put runners at the corners. The cleanup batter Craig Lewis then doubled, scoring Smith. Brian Jones then walked, setting up Francisco Matos, and he produced. Matos singled plating Lewis and Jones, while tying the game up at four runs-a-piece.
Brockton would come all the way back to take the lead in the top half of the seventh. With the bases loaded against Myers, Lewis grounded to second, but the Jackals could not complete the double play that would have ended the inning. The result of the play scored Mike Torres to give the Rox the lead, 5-4.
The Rox offense added two insurance runs in the eighth off reliever Evan Neiser. Matos led the inning off with his first homer of the year to add one more to the Brockton total. Daubert and Bustos then singled consecutively to put runners at the corners. Torres then grounded out, scoring one more, to make it 7-4
New Jersey was not at all down and out. The Jackals would start an amazing comeback in the bottom half of the eighth. Rick Elder led off with a single. After Carlos Pagan popped out, Chris Rowan was hit by a pitch in the hand. Craig Conway then singled, scoring Elder, to cut the lead. The following batter John Anderson doubled into left field, scoring Rowan, to make it a one run ballgame. Smithlin was then intentionally walked to load up the bases. Almonte then grounded into what looked to be a picture perfect double play to end the inning, but first baseman Craig Lewis did not apply the tag on Almonte when the throw pulled him off the bag. Craig Conway scored easily. While Lewis' back was turned with two outs and was arguing the call, John Anderson alertly came around to score the winning run.
Reliever Evan Neiser got the win for the Jackals, while Tony Runion got the loss for the Rox. Ben Grezlovski was awarded the save for the Jackals.
Matos was 2-4, for Brockton, with three RBI.
Goodman continued to hit well for the Jackals. He was 2-4 with for RBI. He now has 10 RBI on the season.
