WEEKLY WRAP-UP: The Cards went 5-2 last week, taking 2 out of 3 from Mahoning Valley (Cleveland Indians) and then 3 out of 4 from Staten Island (New York Yankees). They are currently 22-20 on the season and in 3rd place of the McNamara Division of the New York Penn League, 4.5 games behind division leading Brooklyn (New York Mets). In the race for the wild card spot, the Cardinals are in 2nd place, only 2.0 games back of Hudson Valley (Tampa Bay Devil Rays).
BIRDS WITH BATS: The Cardinals are batting .252 as a team, 7th in the league. SS Matt Shepherd drove home the game-winning run in the top of the 10th inning on August 2 (game 2) at Staten Island. 1B Casey Grimm followed with a two-run home run to insure the Cards 3-0 victory over the Yankees. OF Sean Dobson has hit safely in 12 of his last 15 games, going 19-for-56 (.339) with 14 runs scored and 6 stolen bases. 3B Jake Mullinax has hit safely in 6 of his last 7 games, batting .344 (11-for-32) over the span. CA Cody Palmer went 2-for-4 with a 3-RBI double on August 3 against Staten Island. 2B Chris Patrick has batted .425 (17-for-40) in 10 games since returning to the line-up on July 22 from a wrist injury. He has recorded 5 multi hit games over that time, including 4 hits on August 1. OF Steve Sherman has recorded at least one hit in 22 of his last 27 games with an at-bat, going 31-for-103 (.301) with 17 RBI during that time. OF Wes Swackhamer is riding a 6-game hitting streak, going 8-for-27 (.296) during the streak.
CARDINALS HURLERS: The Cardinals carry a 3.93 ERA as a team, 9th in the league. The pitching staff has not allowed a run in its last 19.1 innings pitched, 3.0 innings shy of the franchise record set in 1995 and matched in 1998 and 1999. With back-to-back shut outs on August 2 (game 2) and 3, the Cards pitched back-to-back shut outs for only the 3rd time in franchise history and the first time since June 18 and 19, 2002 when they shut out Hudson Valley in consecutive games. RHP Miguel Aguero threw 7.0 shut out innings on August 3 against Staten Island, allowing 5 hits while striking out 4 to pick up his 3rd win of the season. In his last 3 appearances, including 2 starts, Aguero is 2-1 with a 0.56 ERA (16.0 IP, 1 ER). RHP Dennis Dove threw 5.0 shut out innings in the game completed on August 2 (game 2), allowing just 3 hits while striking out 7. RHP Derek Roper also threw 5.0 shut out innings in game 2 of the August 2 double-header, picking up the win after allowing 6 hits and striking out 4. RHP Michael Sillman has not allowed a run in his last 8 appearances, a streak which dates to July 6 and spans 10.1 innings pitched. RHP Austin Tubb threw 4.0 shut out innings during a 16 inning contest against Staten Island on August 1, running his scoreless innings streak to 7.0. RHP Jeremy Zick snapped a 12.1 inning scoreless streak when he finally allowed a run on August 2 (game 1).
THE WEEK AHEAD: The Cards open a 3-game road set with the Oneonta Tigers (Detroit Tigers) tonight, and then travel to Brooklyn on Saturday. They return home on Sunday, August 8, at 5:00 pm for game 2 of their series with the Cyclones and then travel to back to Brooklyn on Monday. They close out the week on at home against Hudson Valley on Tuesday at 7:15 pm. Sunday night there is a team poster giveaway, Kids Race Around the Bases and Everything Jersey Night. Tuesday is batting helmet giveaway night and there is a post-game party at the Hampton House Bar & Grill with Cardinals players, coaches and staff.
