New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - After qualifying for the semifinals of the 2008 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a thrilling victory in a penalty shootout on Tuesday night, the New England Revolution will now turn its attention to SuperLiga 2008, as the club will host a highly anticipated match against Mexican power Santos Laguna on Sunday, July 13, at Gillette Stadium. The game will be televised nationally in Spanish on Telefutura, while streaming video of the match will be available in both English and Spanish on mlsnet.com and superliga2008.com. ESPN Deportes Radio will carry the game nationally in Spanish, while local listeners can tune in to the WEEI Radio Network for English audio.
New England (10-4-3, 33 pts.) is currently the top team in Major League Soccer, while Santos won the Clausura 2008 tournament in June to claim the club's third title in its relatively short history.
SuperLiga - a premier tournament that pits the best of the United States against the best of Mexico - will award to its champion a $1 million prize, which is the heftiest winner's purse in North American soccer history. The tournament will be played between July 12 and Aug. 5, with eight clubs - four from the U.S. and four from Mexico - vying to determine a singular champion of North America.
The Revs earned their spot in SuperLiga 2008 by virtue of their status as a 2007 MLS Cup Finalist, and they're joined in the competition by fellow MLS clubs D.C. United, Houston Dynamo and Chivas USA. In addition to Santos, Mexico will be represented by Atlante, CD Guadalajara and Pachuca. New England and Santos will compete in Group B along with Chivas USA and Pachuca.
