New England Revolution Fall to Columbus Crew, 2-1

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution (14-7-10; 52 pts. - 5th in East) fell to the Columbus Crew (15-8-9; 53 pts - 4th in Eastern Conference), 2-1, on Wednesday night at Gillette Stadium. Forward Tomás Chancalay tallied his fourth goal for New England, with assists from DeJuan Jones and Carles Gil, in what marked New England's first home loss of the 2023 MLS regular season.

Columbus opened the scoring in the 20th minute, with Diego Rossi placing a shot into the bottom-right corner. Rossi later assisted on the game winner in the 86th minute, sending in a cross to defender Malte Amundsen, who poked a shot off the bottom of the bar and in for the decisive score.

Trailing 1-0 in the 48th minute, Carles Gil sent a through ball up the right side of the field to Jones, who sent a cross into the middle of the box to meet a streaking Chancalay. The Argentinian forward rocketed a half volley into the net to level the match, his fourth tally in eight league appearances. With a secondary assist on the play, Gil became the second player in MLS history to record 14 or more assists in four different seasons, joining Carlos Valderrama. The captain's team-high four chances created on the night also move him within striking distance of the MLS lead in key passes.

Chancalay led the team with eight shots - the highest single-game total for a Revolution player this season. The Argentine nearly gave the hosts the lead in the 57th minute, hitting the crossbar with a curling right-footed effort. Fellow countryman Gustavo Bou logged his second straight appearance off the bench, a 20-minute shift as he builds fitness following a six-match injury absence.

The result ends New England's home unbeaten streak at 16 games dating back to October 2022, the second longest run in club history and one of shy of the all-time best mark. The Revolution, now 11-1-4 at home in league play, can still set a new single-season record for home points and match the mark for most home wins when they host the Philadelphia Union for the regular season finale on MLS Decision Day presented by AT&T on Saturday, Oct. 21.

POSTGAME NOTES

New England is the last team in MLS to suffer a defeat at home in 2023, as the record at Gillette Stadium moves to 11-1-4.

The 16-game home undefeated streak goes into the history books as the second longest in team annals, one short of the club record.

Carles Gil recorded a secondary assist, his 14th of the campaign - tied for second most in MLS. Gil joins MLS legend Carlos Valderrama as the only players in league history to record 14 or more assists in four or more seasons.

According to Opta, Gil now has 92 chances created on the season, only three behind the league lead as he attempts to pace MLS in that category for the third consecutive year.

Tomás Chancalay tallied his fourth goal in his eighth appearance with the club, including seven consecutive starts.

Chancalay's eight shots were the most in a game by any Revolution player this season.

DeJuan Jones notched his sixth assist of the season - one shy of his career high - on Chancalay's goal. Jones now has 20 assists across all competitions in his Revolution career.

Dave Romney pitched in a team-high five clearances along with two tackles won and three aerials won.

Gustavo Bou added another substitute appearance in his return from injury, a 20-minute outing.

Emir Bajraktarević made his first appearance since September 16, entering as a substitute in the 75th minute. The Homegrown Player scored a brace in Revolution II's victory in the MLS NEXT Pro Playoffs on Sunday.
