St. Paul Saints News Release

WINNIPEG, MB (July 11, 2015) - A routine fly ball that turned into a double proved to be the turning point in the game as the St. Paul Saints took a lead into the bottom of the ninth only to lose 4-3 to the Winnipeg Goldeyes at Shaw Park on Saturday night.

With the Saints leading 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth closer Ryan Rodebaugh got Josh Mazzola to hit a routine fly ball to right. Mike Kvasnicka, however, never saw it and it dropped in for a double. Jon Weber followed with a single to right putting runners at the corners. A wild pitch scored Mazzola to tie the game at three and moved Weber to second. A walk to Ryan Babineau and an intentional walk to Luis Alen loaded the bases. Brad Boyer's sacrifice fly won the game for the Goldeyes.

The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Willie Argo reached on a bunt single. Vinny DiFazio singled Argo to third and Argo scored on a sac fly by Ian Gac.

In the fourth Kvasnicka hit a solo homer to left, his eighth of the season, to give the Saints a 2-0 lead. Following the third out of the inning the rain came and delayed the game for an hour and 44 minutes.

After the rain delay neither starter, Pedro Hernandez for the Saints and Kyle Anderson for the Goldeyes, remained in the game. The Saints turned it over to Drew Gay who was sharp in his first three innings of relief. In the seventh, however, Weber led off with a single and, with one out, Alen hit a two-run homer to left, his second of the season, to tie the game at two. Gay went 4.0 innings allowing two runs on three hits while striking out three.

The Saints regained the lead in the top of the eight when Anthony Phillips led off with a double against Brendan Lafferty. Dan Kaczrowski sacrificed him over to third and Alonzo Harris singled him home.

The same two teams meet in game three of the four game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. The Saints send RHP Robert Coe (4-1, 3.28) to the mound against Goldeyes LHP Nick Hernandez (5-2, 1.89). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
