Blasters Tackle Sioux City to Take Series

Joplin, MO-The Blasters broke open a close contest with a seven-run eighth inning and cruised to a 10-1 victory over Sioux City Saturday night at Joe Becker Stadium.

Joplin (27-17) now owns an 8-1 record against Central Division competition. The Blasters also improved to 19-4 when scoring first in games this season. Joplin plated a single mark in the bottom of the first. With one out, Oscar Mesa tripled into the right field corner. Yasser Gomez then bounced a chopper back to the pitcher and Mesa was tagged out after a long rundown between third and home. Gomez reached all the way to third in the process. Carlos Ramirez brought in Gomez with a liner scorched into left-center.

Sioux City (34-15) quickly tied it with a run in the top of the second. Ryan Court reached on an infield single to short. A two-out double to the wall in left-center by Ino Patron scored Court to even the game. In the bottom of the second, Joplin reclaimed a one-run lead. Omar Luna led off with a double off the bag at third and into the left field corner. Steven Tinoco moved Luna to third as he punched a one-out line drive single to center. Jesus Solorzano gave the Blasters a 2-1 lead on a fielder's choice that scored Luna.

Joplin added a single mark in the fifth. Yasser Gomez had a two-out RBI single to center that scored Jesus Solorzano. Solorzano had been hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. In the eighth, the Blasters busted it wide open with seven runs on five hits. Eleven batters took part in the inning. Solorzano and Oscar Mesa each had an RBI single in the at-bat. Gomez posted a two-run scoring single. And, Jake Taylor added a two-run triple to polish it off.

Nestor Molina had his longest outing of the season and posted the win for Joplin. Molina (4-3) lasted eight innings and gave up one earned run on six hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Ryan Zimmerman suffered the loss for Sioux City. Zimmerman (7-2) worked six innings and allowed three earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

The Blasters outhit the Explorers 12-to-6. Oscar Mesa and Yasser Gomez both went 2-for-5. Mesa drove in one and scored one. Gomez had three RBIs and two runs. Omar Luna and Jesus Solorzano both collected two hits Luna scored twice and Solorzano drove in two with two runs.
