Frederick Keys News Release

On a beautiful Friday night, LHP Nate Nery gave the crowd of 4,328, a lot to cheer for. Nery, who entered the game at 1-2 with an ERA of 4.85, pitched an absolute gem as the Keys defeated the Wilmington Blue Rocks, 2-0. With the win the Keys improved to 10-4 at Harry Grove Stadium and 17-11 on the season.

Right from the start, Nery was on top of his game. He retired the first 11 batters he faced before surrendering a two-out single to Eric Hosmer, the Carolina League's top hitter entering Friday night.

The Keys bats provided some insurance for Nery right away.

LF Xavier Avery, Frederick's leadoff hitter, took one of the first pitches he saw from LHP Ivor Hodgson Jr. over the right field fence for a solo homerun. The homerun was Avery's first in a Keys uniform and third of his career. Frederick scored another in fifth to stretch the lead to 2-0.

The two-run lead was plenty for Nery. The Moon Township, PA native threw 7.2 scoreless innings and allowed just five hits on the night. The 7.2 innings pitched was the longest outing by any Key this season and tied Nery's career high for most innings pitched. The last time Nery pitched 7.2 innings in a game was on September 1, 2008, when he was with the Delmarva Shorebirds. Nery also struck out four and walked zero in the victory.

RHP Brandon Cooney closed out the win for his fifth save of the season.

Nery improved to 2-2 on the season while his counterpart Hodgson fell to 2-2 despite pitching well. Hodgson threw 7 innings allowed two runs, one earned, on nine hits.

Game two will take place Saturday night between Frederick and Wilmington. The Keys will send LHP Cole McCurry (1-1, 5.48) to hill. McCurry will be opposed by LHP Chris Dwyer (0-2, 4.37). First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. on Carroll County Keys for Reading Night. Fireworks presented by Uncle Bob's Self Storage will follow the game.
