WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Salem Red Sox put together a pair of three run innings to motor past the Dash 7-4 at BB&T Ballpark on Friday night. Winston-Salem dropped the first game of the three-game series and fell three games behind the Red Sox for first place in the Southern Division.

Brandon Short got the Dash (18-10) off to an early lead, homer on Fabian Williamson's second pitch of the game. Short's blast put Winston ahead 1-0 and extended his 2010 professional baseball-best hitting streak to 25 games.

After Charlie Leesman retired the first seven batters he faced, the lefthander ran into trouble in the third. He yielded back-to-back singles to the 8-9 batters before getting Ryan Dent to line out for the second out of the inning. Tim Federowicz doubled to left to tie the game at one and put two in scoring position. Anthony Rizzo followed that with a two-run double to give the Red Sox (21-7) a 3-1 lead.

Salem added one more in the fourth with a Mitch Dening RBI double and went ahead 4-1.

Williamson pitched well until the fifth, when Short doubled on a hard-hit ball off the shortstop's glove to start the inning. After Short advanced to third on a groundout, Jon Gilmore singled him home to halve the Salem lead.

Ozzie Lewis tied it at four with a monstrous two-run home run to left field. It was Lewis' third home run of the season and it ended the night for Williamson.

The resilient Red Sox plated three more in the top of the fifth against Dash reliever Dylan Axelrod (1-1). The first four batters singled, including an RBI base hit by Jon Hee to give Salem a 5-4 advantage.

Another run scored on an error by Gilmore while a third came home on Rizzo's sacrifice fly to put the Red Sox ahead 7-4.

William Latimer (2-1) stymied the Dash bats over 2.1 innings to pick up the win. Blake Maxwell pitched two scoreless innings for his second save.

Winston-Salem attempts to even the weekend series on Saturday night when RHP Nevin Griffith (4-0, 2.12) opposes RHP Caleb Clay (2-0, 2.81). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the webcast pre-game show can be heard beginning at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com.
