May 7th, 2010 -- 6:05 PM
Calvin Falwell Field @ Lynchburg City Stadium
RHP Curtis Partch (2-1, 3.32) vs. RHP J.J Hoover (0-2, 6.46)
THE HILLCATS: Lynchburg got blanked 2-0 last night in the final game of their four-game series with Kinston at City Stadium...The Hillcats still took three out of four from the K-Tribe and have won three straight series heading into this set with Myrtle Beach...Tonight the Cats play the first game of their series against the Pelicans and the eighth game of their current ten-game homestand...They enter today three games back of first place Frederick in the Northern Division...
VS. MYRTLE BEACH: The Hillcats went 12-8 against the Pelicans last season and were 5-4 at City Stadium...Lynchburg's 10-3 win at Myrtle Beach last season on June 16th clinched the first half Northern Division Championship...Myrtle Beach has the all-time advantage in the series 117-102, and they are 54-53 in the Hill City...
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Hillcats fell to 8-6 at City Stadium this season with their loss last night...They are still 5-2 on this current 10-game homestand that is following a stretch of 13 games in a row on the road in which they went 5-8...The Cats are in the midst of a stretch of 17 out of 21 games at Calvin Falwell Field and they will play 20 of their 30 games in the month of May at home...
BAGEL'D: Last night marked the first time this season Lynchburg has been shutout...They have not held their opponent scoreless thus far this year...
IT'S A WALK-OFF...AGAIN: Wednesday night Lynchburg won with a ninth inning rally that resulted in a walk-off win for the second straight night...Those were the the Hillcats first two walk-off wins of the season and it was also the first two times they won a game this season with their final team at-bat...The only other game decided with a walk-off run was when the Cats lost at Potomac on a two-run home run in the bottom of the tenth inning at Pfitzner Stadium on April 25th...
COMEBACK CATS 2.0? The Hillcats trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday night before they scored three runs to earn the 3-2 victory...They trailed 5-0 entering the seventh inning Tuesday night before rallying for a 6-5 win...These two games marked the first two times Lynchburg has won when trailing after five innings (previously 0-8) and after eight frames (0-9)...The Cats had only come from behind to win three games all season before Tuesday night, and all three comeback wins were just early one-run deficits...Last season the Comeback Cats had 23 come from behind victories out of their 45 wins in the first half of the season...Nine of those wins were with the team trailing in the seventh inning or later...The 2009 Hillcats had five walk-off wins, but none of them came in back-to-back nights...
KNUCKLE PUCK: INF Cody Puckett went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a walk last night...He is now riding a season-long seven-game hitting streak...Over that time he is 11-for-26 (.423) with six doubles, a home run, four RBI, six runs scored and two stolen bases...He has raised his average from .255 to .315 over those seven contests...Puckett leads the team with ten two-baggers and is tied for second in the Carolina League...In his eight games in the two spot in the line-up he is 12-for-28 (.429) with seven doubles, a homer, five RBI, eight runs and three steals...
TOUGH LUCK LOSER: RHP Scott Carroll worked a season-high seven innings last night and allowed just two runs in taking the loss...It was the longest start this season by a Hillcat and the team's eighth quality start of the season...In three games (two starts) Carroll has allowed just five runs in 17 innings of work (2.65 ERA), but he is now 0-2 on the season...
DON'T I KNOW YOU: LHP Daryl Harang made his Hillcats debut last night and did not allow a run in one and 1/3 innings of action...Daryl is the younger brother of RHP Aaron Harang of the Cincinnati Reds...Aaron has been the Opening Day starter for the Reds five years in a row...Daryl pitched in independent baseball last year with the York Revolution in the Atlantic League and was signed in the off-season by the Reds...He began this season with Double-A Carolina, where he went 1-2 with a 6.32 ERA in seven games...
THE PRESSURE'S HIGH: INF Alex Buchholz smacked the game-winning RBI single Wednesday night in the bottom of the ninth inning to cap off the Hillcats comeback walk-off victory...This season he is batting .474 (9-for-19) with men in scoring position...Last season Buchholz batted just .165 (15-for-91) with RISP with Advanced-A Sarasota...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP J.J. Hoover was selected by the Braves in the 10th round of the 2008 draft out of Calhoun (AL) Community College...He made his professional debut that same year with Rookie Danville and went 1-0 with no earned runs allowed in two relief appearances...Last season he spent the majority of the season with full season Low-A Rome and he posted a 7-6 mark with a 3.35 ERA and one save in 25 games (18 starts)...He also made one start with Myrtle Beach and took a no-decision as he allowed three runs in three innings of work...This season he has made five starts with the Pelicans and is 0-2 with a 6.46 ERA...Hoover entered the season ranked as the 11th best prospect in the Braves minor league system according to Baseball America...Tonight will be his first appearance against Lynchburg...
