Nelson, Sounds Knock Off Sky Sox, 7-3

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Brad Nelson's hot bat continued to sizzle on Tuesday night, knocking in four runs for the Sounds in a 7-3 victory over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox at Greer Stadium.

Nelson raised his season average to .346 with a pair of two-run singles in four at-bats and helped jump-start a Sounds offense that was shut out the previous night. It was only the Sounds' second win in 17 night games this season.

Colorado Springs plated the first run of the game in the first inning when Jon Herrera led off with a bunt single and then stole second before Cory Sullivan singled him in on the next pitch. Nashville starter Mark DiFelice escaped further damage by inducing a double play from Seth Smith and striking out Ian Stewart to end the inning.

Sky Sox starter Victor Zambrano followed DiFelice's rocky start by walking Hernan Iribarren, Laynce Nix, and Joe Dillon to start the bottom half of the inning. Brad Nelson capitalized on Zambrano's control issues by continuing his hot streak with a two-run single, giving him a total of 12 RBIs in the last five games. Dillon scored the final run of the inning on the next at-bat when Vinny Rottino grounded into a double play.

Zambrano's control problems continued in the bottom of the third when he issued back-to-back walks to Nix and Dillon on eight straight pitches, and Rottino came through with a two-out triple that scored both runners. Not to be outdone by Nelson, Rottino is on a hot streak of his own, batting .302 with 12 RBIs in his last 10 games after getting off to a slow start this season.

The Sky Sox responded in the top of the fourth when Joe Koshansky belted a two-run homer to right field. It was his second home run in two days and his fifth on the year.

But Nelson struck again in the bottom of the fifth inning with another two-run single to extend the Sounds lead to four after Nix singled and Dillon doubled in front of him. With that hit, Nelson raised his average to .353 with runners in scoring position on the season.

Erasmo Ramirez pitched two scoreless innings in relief and handed the ball over to Luis Pena who kept the Sky Sox off the board in the ninth inning to end the game.

DiFelice (2-0) earned his second win in as many starts on the season after pitching six innings and giving up three runs on six hits while striking out five.

Zambrano (0-4) was handed the loss after giving up seven earned runs on six hits and seven walks while striking out seven over 5 2/3 innings. His erratic outing included 114 total pitches with only 57 of them for strikes and raised his ERA to 10.23 for the season.

Sounds shortstop Ozzie Chavez had a four-game hit streak snapped after a 0-for-4 night.

The teams will face a quick turnaround on Wednesday with an early start time of 10:30 a.m. for the third game of the series. Right-hander Dave Bush (NR), recently sent down from Milwaukee, will man the bump for the Sounds and face off against righty Josh Towers (2-1, 6.15) for the Sky Sox.
