AUSTIN, TX - DeMarcus Nelson scored 29 points and grabbed six rebounds as the Austin Toros defeated the Tulsa 66ers 131-119 on Wednesday night at the Austin Convention Center. The Toros snapped a three game losing streak and ended the 66ers four game winning streak.
The Toros opened the game with a 29-11 run and built a 19-point lead in the first quarter. Austin led 71-50 at halftime and set a season high for points scored in the first half.
"It was a good effort coming off of the road trip," Toros head coach Quin Snyder said. "We are getting to know each on the court and I am happy with how we played."
Tulsa cut the Austin lead to 113-104 in the fourth quarter but couldn't complete the comeback against the Toros, who improved to 28-17 on the season. Prior to today's victory against the 66ers, the Toros had gone 2-8 over their last ten games.
Malik Hairston, playing in his first home game with the team since being re-assigned from the San Antonio Spurs, added 26 points in 34 minutes of play. Ryan Bright scored a season-high 15 points and three Toros finished with 26 points including Marcus Williams and Dwayne Jones.
Gary Forbes and DJ White each scored 24 points to lead the 66ers in scoring. Ryan Humphrey added 18 off of the bench.
With the victory, the Toros need one victory to clinch a playoff birth for the second consecutive season. The Toros play four of their last five games at the Austin Convention Center after playing nine games in March on the road. Austin hosts the Iowa Energy this Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
