
Wizards Tame the Stampede

Bismarck, N.D. April 1, 2009: Wizards forward Richard Hendrix took control of the match up with Idaho early scoring 21 of his 27 points on the night in the first half. A dramatic game towards the end found the curtain falling on the Stampede giving Dakota a 119 - 111 victory at the Bismarck Civic Center.
Up by 23 points the Wizards started the game strong shooting 63% from the field in the first quarter and extending their lead towards the half. Idaho however started the third quarter with a 20-4 run to pull within one point and would eventually tie the game five different times.
The defining moment came late in the fourth when forward Renaldo Major hit a lay up and got fouled in the process. Following the made free throw, forward Richard Hendrix got a steal and the Wizards finished out the game making 11 free throws while shooting 91% from the charity stripe (32-35).
"We started really well tonight," said Wizards head coach Duane Ticknor. "Richard played a phenomenal game tonight, as a team we played well and it showed even more when it got close and out guys didn't budge. Idaho is a great team, we new they would make a run, it was how we responded to that run is what counted."
Dakota, now 25-21 on the season, had all five starters finish in double figures. Besides Hendrix's' 27 points he grabbed 12 boards. Guard Blake Ahearn continued his strong play nailing 27 points as well going 10 for 10 from the free throw line. Guard Maurice Baker had 18 points and 9 rebounds, while center David Monds had 16 points and 11 assists. Forward Renaldo Major finished the victory with 16 points as well.
Idaho, now 28-18 on the season were led by center Lance Allred who absolutely dominated for the Stampede going 12-16 from the field for 25 points and seven rebounds. Idaho's had many bright spots off the bench with all of the reserves scoring in double figures. Guard Jamal Tatum led the bench with 18 points and 9 assists, while Mildon Ambres had 15 points to go with his 9 rebounds. Forward Brent Petway was ejected following a discussion with the referees in the third quarter.
Dakota hits the road tomorrow and head to Fort Wayne for a match up on Friday before heading home for another central division game vs. the Sioux Falls Skyforce. Idaho now travels to Sioux Falls before heading home for two divisional games against the Bakersfield Jam.
