Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs defeated the Gwinnett Braves 5-3 on Sunday afternoon at NBT Bank Stadium to win three out of four games against the Braves. Chris Nelson hit a double and a home run and drove in three of the five runs for the Chiefs.

Syracuse (38-58) scored first with two runs in the bottom of the second inning against Gwinnett starter Alex White. Kevin Keyes led off the inning with a line-drive single to left field. Chris Nelson followed with a double to deep center field that plated Keyes from first to score the first run of the game. The next batter, Caleb Ramsey, lined a single up the middle to give Syracuse a 2-0 lead after two innings.

Gwinnett (46-48) used the long ball to even the score at two in the top of the fourth against Syracuse starter Paolo Espino. Jose Peraza led off the frame with a single to center field. Two batters later, with Peraza on second, Cedric Hunter hammered a home run over the right-field fence to square the score at two.

The Braves took the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Sean Kazmar began the inning with a double into the left-field corner. Tony Gwynn, Jr. made a fielding error trying to pick up the ball in left to allow Kazmar to reach third. Two batters later, White helped his own cause with an RBI single to center to give Gwinnett a 3-2 advantage.

The Chiefs grabbed the lead back in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Keyes hit an infield single to the shortstop Kazmar. Nelson followed with an opposite-field home run to right field to give Syracuse a 4-3 lead after five.

Syracuse added one more in the bottom of the sixth. With one out in the inning, Steve Lerud lined a base hit back up the middle. Lerud advanced to second on a ground out back to the pitcher White by pinch hitter Mario Lisson. Then, Darin Mastroianni singled to center to plate Lerud for the fifth Chiefs run.

The Chiefs hit the road for seven games against the Buffalo Bisons and Lehigh Valley IronPigs. The road trip begins on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Bisons at Coca-Cola Field. Syracuse has not selected a starter for Monday to oppose veteran left-hander Randy Wolf for Buffalo.
