Gwinnett Stripers News Release

SYRACUSE, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs (38-58) got a clutch two-run homer from Chris Nelson in the bottom of the fifth and came from behind to beat the Gwinnett Braves (46-48) by a 5-3 score Sunday afternoon in the finale of the four-game series at NBT Bank Stadium.

The victory gave the Chiefs a 3-1 series win in Syracuse. They also won six of eight against Gwinnett in 2015.

Syracuse opened an early 2-0 lead against Gwinnett starter Alex White (L, 1-3) in the bottom of the second. Kevin Keyes led off with a single to left and scored when Nelson doubled off the wall in center. A throwing error on the play by shortstop Sean Kazmar enabled Nelson to move to third. Caleb Ramsey then plated Nelson with a single to center for the second run of the game.

But Gwinnett battled right back in the top of the fourth as Jose Peraza led off with a single to center, moved to second on a bunt from Eric Young, Jr. and to third on a long fly-out to right by Adonis Garcia. With Peraza on third, Cedric Hunter tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run homer to left off Syracuse starting pitcher Paolo Espino (W, 3-3).

The G-Braves edged ahead in the top of the fifth as Kazmar doubled into the left-field corner and moved to third when Tony Gwynn, Jr., misplayed the ball. With the infield pulled in and one out, White helped his cause with a single to right-center scoring Kazmar for a 3-2 lead.

However, the big blow of the game came in the bottom of that fifth inning. The Chiefs had two outs and no one on when Keyes reached first on an infield single. Nelson crushed the first pitch from White over the right field wall for the game-changing two-run shot, putting Syracuse up 4-3.

The Chiefs tacked on a final run in the bottom of the sixth when Darin Mastroianni singled in Steve Lerud from second.

White pitched 5.2 innings with seven hits, five earned run, three walks and four strikeouts. Hunter Cervenka went 0.1 of an inning with one walk and one strikeout. Vin Mazzaro worked 1.0 inning with two walks and one strikeout. Greg Smith pitched a three-up-three-down bottom of the eighth.

Espino went 6.0 innings with five innings, three earned runs and two strikeouts. Rafael Martin pitched 2.0 innings with one hit and two strikeouts. Jose Valverde (S, 10) worked a scoreless top of the ninth.

Offensively for Gwinnett, Hunter was 1-for-4 with the homer, his team-leading sixth of the season. Peraza went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to seven games.

Nelson paced the Syracuse attack with a 2-for-2 day that included a double, his second homer of the season and three RBIs. Keyes was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

The G-Braves' road trip continues Monday night with the first of a four-game series in Rochester against the Red Wings, the Triple-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. Right-hander Kanekoa Texeira (0-3, 3.59 ERA) will start for Gwinnett. The Red Wings will counter with right-hander Taylor Rogers (7-6, 3.19 ERA). First pitch at Frontier Field is set for 7:05 p.m. Tony Schiavone has the call beginning at 6:30 p.m. on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com
