Nelson Blasts Explorers To I-29 Trophy

Sioux City, IA - The Sioux Falls Canaries (17-26) fell 8-0 to the Sioux City Explorers (16-27) in a game where the first six runs were all driven in by Sioux City outfielder Justin Nelson. The win by the Explorers clinched them the I-29 Rivalry Trophy for the 2009 season, the second straight year the Explorers have won the trophy.

Noel Baca and Trevor Fox dueled scoreless through the first five and a half innings. Sioux City got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth. The inning started with a walk to Boomer Berry. Dustin Jones followed with a sacrifice bunt that advanced Berry to second. Jones was able to reach safely on the play as Canaries pitcher Noel Baca misplayed the ball for an error. With two on and nobody out, Alex Llanos laid down a bunt single to load the bases. Justin Nelson followed at the plate with a grand slam, his 11th home run of the season. Nelson's bomb put Sioux City up, 4-0.

Sioux City doubled their lead in the eighth. Jones and Llanos started the inning with back-to-back singles. Nelson then followed with a two-run double to plate both runners and extend the Sioux City lead to 6-0. After Greg Stevens walked, Jason Colson hit a two-run double to plate Nelson and Stevens, capping the scoring with the Explorers out in front by eight, 8-0.

Noel Baca (3-6) gave up six runs, five earned, on nine hits in seven innings to suffer the loss for the Canaries. Trevor Fox (6-4) threw seven shutout innings to beat the Canaries for a third time this season. Tyler Meigs pitched the final two innings, allowing just a hit and two walks, in preserving the shutout for the Explorers.

The Canaries and Explorers wrap up the season series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Birds will return home on Thursday to begin the final series of 2009, hosting the Lincoln Saltdogs at 7:05 p.m. in "International Night" at Sioux Falls Stadium.
